General question abut jelly roll quilt top
I did the quilt top in an hour as you indicated...Its great, but am I doing something wrong? I opened the jelly roll and started stitching, but my colors and/or patterns are grouped together instead of being scattered and spread out...Am I doing something wrong when folding and stitching?
Re: General question abut jelly roll quilt top
The jelly roll race top is pretty hit and miss where the colors end up. You think you have everything spread out, then when it's folded and sewn again it ends up color next to the same color. So, no, you didn't do anything wrong, it's just the nature of the beast.
Re: General question abut jelly roll quilt top
One of the gals in the scrappy quilt group I visit said she cut her strips in half. Then she tumbled them in the dryer (air only) for a few minutes. When she pulled them out they were all nicely mixed up with only a few tangles.
She was much more pleased with the dispersal of colors & patterns using this method. It will obviously mean more seams, although it may be worth it for a more varied look.
Re: General question abut jelly roll quilt top
It does happen that way. I made one and was disappointed in the way it turned out. It just depends on the Jelly Roll. I prefer other Jelly Roll patterns. They aren't as fast to make, but I think they turn out better.
Re: General question abut jelly roll quilt top
I sorted them by color/value and took from piles alternately to spread the color out more..but you still have places of "sameness" occasionally.. I like the cutting in half trick..
Re: General question abut jelly roll quilt top
I agree, you will have pools of the same color. The suggestion to cut them in half works well. I've made them by cutting up fat quarters, you need to make a lot more seams, but your colors are more dispersed.

Re: General question abut jelly roll quilt top
I never sort mine because each time you fold in half (apart from the first time) it brings a different pattern from further down into play. They only time I do make minor adjustments is if I have several duplicates when I move them down about 6 places. Here are a few examples

Re: General question abut jelly roll quilt top
I'm ready to start the Essex Flannel jelly roll. It has only 16 prints to it with 2 -3 pieces of each. I will certainly have to cut mine in half!
I haven't done a JRR yet and want to use this myself so it'll be ok however it turns out. It's only realistic that there will be pools of the same with so few prints in the roll. You can see it here: https://www.missouriquiltco.com/shop...nel-jelly-roll

Oh wow. That's a great idea.
Re: General question abut jelly roll quilt top
I have mixed feelings about the jelly roll race quilt. I like how it comes together so quickly, but I'm not too excited about the bias joins and the grouping together of the same fabrics. I am kind of obsessed with this quilt, The Stash: Jelly Jive & Blended Stripes, it has the look of the JRR, but is more pleasing to my eye. Looks like it would be easy enough to make up the pattern yourself. Just my two cents.
