    Default Seeking Advice

I'm formulating an idea for the 12 blocks I have from a 2005 Block of the Month club. The theme was Asian, and my plan was to sash the blocks in black fabric and add borders.

Here's the thing: Back in 2005, I didn't know that you need to use scant 1/4" seams, I didn't know that you need to measure each micro block as you sew them together into the main block, oh there were all sorts of things I didn't know. The result is that my 12 blocks are not all 12-1/2 by 12-1/2.

Sew ... I was going to add a thin black border to each block and then trim them all to 13 by 13 before adding my 2-inch sashing. But our dear Jenny has taught me to always look for the easy way to accomplish things, so I came up with a new idea.

What if I put a black border around each block, making them each 14-1/2 by 14-1/2? Then I'd just sew them all together and they'd looked sashed.

What do you think? Will that work? Am I missing anything? I look forward to hearing your advice.

Sounds like a good plan to me! The difference will be so small that no one will notice that one block is a fraction of an inch different. This is a method that is used a lot for block swaps.

I'd never heard the idea before. It's good to know it's been tried, tested, and works. Thank you!

wait hold up...... you will have a DOUBLE sash around each block if you go around each block with the black. If you go around each block then each block will have a sash so when you put the next block up to it, it will also have a sash so it will be double sashed. ask me how i know...

    Hi Kelly,

How do you know? I love hearing great stories!

I would like your opinion, though. Since this is black fabric -- and black hides everything (I used to be a magician's assistant) -- could I get away with it?

it will "shrink" your block....visually that is. Your eye will go to the sashing not the block..... I was a newbie using those embroider quilt blocks and i went around each one and with cornerstones......i had a double sash on all blocks and a four square block too....i left it.

Kelli is right. If you do it to every block you will have 4" in between your block.

Ahhhh, I understand the problem. I won't have cornerstones, so I'll dodge that bullet. But I appreciate the warnings from you both, Kelli and Marilyn. I definitely need to think this through more.

    Thank you!!!!!

sash 3 sides of the top row. top ,left side, and bottom. sash all 4 sides of last block in top row on rt.

row 2 - sash only the left side and bottom of each block, and rt side of last block.

row 3/4/5/6--- same as row 2.

That should get sashing around each block

I have been in your shoes. I would put the blocks on the design wall, put in some black strips to see how wide you would like the sashing, measure it, and divide that in half. Add about 3/4 " and sash all your blocks on all four sides. (For instance, if you can deal with 2" sashing, then cut the sashing strips 1-3/4", sew them on the blocks. It will give you about 1/4" all the way around to use for squaring when you take away seam allowances. If that isn't enough, add a little more than 3/4") Then, trim to an even size and join them. I've had to do that before. It's a pain, but relatively simple and it evens out weird blocks without drawing attention to them. Since the sashing is black, the seam down the center of the sashing doesn't really show if you do an overall quilting pattern.
