Kona cotton across the board
Hello everyone. :icon_wave:
I am very new to quilting. I am halfway through the Robert Kaufman Whosville Forest quilt kit. My first ever. I have been lurking and watching videos pretty much non-stop for the last week or so. I have a question (one among many) that I haven't found an answer to yet. When it comes to 100% Kona cotton, are they pretty much all the same? Would Robert Kaufman's Kona cotton be the same as say, Hobby Lobby's or Joann's Kona cotton?
Sorry for such a simple question but I haven't been able to find the answer through google either.
Thanks,
Joanne :0
Re: Kona cotton across the board
This is something I have wondered myself..... will be waiting for the gurus to come up with our answer. Welcome, by the way! No question is too simple........but this is not one I have seen discussed on here...yet.
Re: Kona cotton across the board
I am not sure about that but I have done the test of the cottons at Joann's. There is Kona for $8 a yd, there is Legacy Studio for $6 a yd and Country Classic for $5 a yd. All fully 100% cottons. The Country Classic is thinner than the other two, right on the bolt. Once washed it seems thinner and doesn't quilt very well...reminds me of polyester/cotton broadcloth. I didn't like it at all. I tried the other two, and I dont' see a difference either on the bolt of after pre wash (which I always do for all fabrics) or when quilting with it. I have tired 3 times to test those two and none of the times has there ever been a difference. So I buy what is cheapest...the Legacy Studio and have been happy with it and never a problem of any kind. I did just today, buy the KONA in a dark brown simply cause the dark brown in LS was just not the right dark brown to match the dark brown print I had...so I only bought it due to color. But I had a 50% off coupon for it so I was able to live through it! But as far as the name brands...can't help you there. Would be nice to know if there is a difference tho! I dont' keep up with the name brands simply cause they change their prints constantly and I don't have the time or energy to keep up with it!

Re: Kona cotton across the board
Thank you very much for that. Good read. Good responses to it also.
Re: Kona cotton across the board
At my Hobby Lobby, the bolts of Kona are Robert Kaufman Kona cottons. I haven't noticed any difference between those and the Konas I've bought from quilt shops. The ones at my JoAnns aren't Kaufman Konas and I can tell the difference.

Really??? In Hobby Lobby I didn't see the Kaufman name but then again I was lucky to see the word Kona. Didn't have my glasses on. I have decided to buy my solids from there. It's so hard to find a line of designer print fabrics in a local store. So I will buy jelly rolls for the prints and local store for the solids. The Kona in Hobby Lobby was $6.99 a yard and that is without the 40% off! Love stores that have 40-50% off coupons.
Re: Kona cotton across the board
I am like you, soul60s, I get my Kona from Hobby Lobby.....never have my glasses and just see Kona...I had no idea there were different ones. I love those coupons, too! We don't have a LQS close, the nearest one is 30 miles, and just to need something in a hurry, Hobby Lobby is where I have to go.
Re: Kona cotton across the board
What about using the Country Classic for making those bags that Jenny has the tutorial for ?
hmmm I am worried now. I purchased some of the Country Classic in white ( only I purchase the Legacy for the other 2 dark colors ( awhile ago)
Should I just bite the bullet and purchase the white "over" again, but this time in the legacy ?????????
I have all the squares cut out, and some of them pinned together, to make the bags that Jenny made with the Charm Packs.
Re: Kona cotton across the board
The speaker at our last guild meeting said to beware that Kona cotton and Kona Craft cotton were two very different animals. The feel of the fabric will tell you if it is good quality or not.

Would the bolt say Kona Craft cotton? The ones I saw in Hobby Lobby just said Kona cotton. If you don't have knowledge of how they should feel then it makes it difficult to know.

My LQS is small. There isn't a lot of material. At least not the kind I am interested in. Mostly just floral stuff. I don't mind floral but I like vivid color, not so much muted. Since I am new to this and have spent enough, I have to cut back in other places. When I get better, I will buy more quality fabrics. I just wasn't sure if there was a difference.

The ones from Hobby Lobby that I've used in the past say Robert Kaufman Kona Cotton, like in this picture:

Joann's carries Country Classics, Legacy Studio and Kona solids. I wrote this above, but.. quickly..I have tested three times these three and the CC is the thinnest and the LS and Kona I can't tell a difference. But that is not to say the CC is not good. I was using it before I learned of the other two. Just starch it heavy so the threads hold their shape during all the working times (so it doesn't stretch any) and then once finished they'd be okay. If budget is the problem..CC works fine but since I only shop with coupons..Joan's has the 40/50% off coupons so I buy the Legacy since for a buck more from the CC it is better I think and the Kona is not $2-$3 a yard better! I get 2 yards for the price of one. I do see tho that Kona has a few better color options than LS so sometimes I get the Kona for color reason..but still half off.
Re: Kona cotton across the board
I will definitely look next trip to Hobby Lobby. The LQS are so expensive...I don't mind paying for nice fabric, but you use so much of the basics...you have to save somewhere! Soul60s I love the color too, I have resisted quilting for years because my mother quilted and her color choices were so dark. Her style was more primitive, and that's not mine. It is not just your mother's quilting anymore! The fabrics are so beautiful now, I love the turquoises, oranges, reds! I love the old style quilt patterns done in more modern fabrics. I am having so much fun quilting.

You are so right! I see quilts now that look 3D! It's really amazing how things have changed. More men are quilting, vibrant lively colors, and some quilts are works of art. I'm inspired!
Re: Kona cotton across the board
meeee too! I have probably 5 or 6 color schemes on my mind right now to make. My mind races with ideas for quilted things!

I have found that the real Kaufman Kona has the name and copyright on the bolt end. Isn't there at Joann's (ours anyway) but have seen it at Hobby Lobby. I look for the little symbol.

I will look much more closely now that I know what too look for. I need good material since the seam ripper and I are on a first name basis. :icon_hihi:
