Don't know about the stars, but I think the center blocks of the one with the squares are called Granny Squares, and the surrounding seem to be from the "trip around the world" technique. I haven't made either one, so I'm not positive about those names.
Thanks Jean. I appreciate your response.
I agree with Jean about the quilt on the right. I've never seen stars like those in the pic on the left.

I looked up eight pointed stat quilt and pages come up that look similar. Is it possible that the centers are appliqued?

I also agree with the second quilt being a version of the granny square. As far as the first one...I'm gonna just say that hubby's grandmother was a very creative woman. Could it be she just made up the design herself?

The centers of the stars are appliqued. I tried looking up star patterns and there were two variations I found that have eight points. I didn't find anything like these with the appliques in the center. I wish I had known my husbands granny when she made these but when we met she was in a nursing home and had dementia. She was a very creative woman as I can see from these quilts. I wonder if she did make these up on her own.
Why don't you name it? Maybe Granny Stars.

I like that idea Vonnie!
