I have a question that may be silly....I'm working on my first dresdens. I was so intimidated at first, but I am very pleased with how they are turning out. My question is, I want them to be randomly/irregularly placed on the quilt top. Do I just get a big piece of background fabric and then applique them on where I want them? And then sandwhich/quilt as usual?
I think that is probably the best way to do a random placement of the dresdens. Depending on how big you want your quilt to be, you might even buy the 108" wide fabric usually used for backing and that way you wouldn't have to piece the top background at all.

I have seen people do beautiful applique on top of a plain patchwork quilt.
One that comes to mind is stairway to heaven. It has cats appliqued on stairs - simply gorgeous!

I love Dresden plates and yours are great with the colors you've chosen. Just some thought on appliqueing on a large piece of fabric as it can be challenging and if you have a big harp/throat space on your machine it may work okay but you've got to put all that extra fabric somewhere when working on the sections of the top without having a lot of creasing from handling the fabric and the constant moving of it in a circle to applique it down. Just a thought...
This is sort of the 'look' that I am going for, but larger than a baby quilt. Dresdens will be the same size. I guess I could randomly place them on a smaller center piece and then do borders? More manageable that way?

Maybe you could just use large squares and don't center them. Then when you sew the squares together it should be more random. The squares would have to be considerably larger than the dresdens so you could put them in a corner. Don't know if this makes any sense. I just finished a king size dresden that I set the blocks on point and used sashing between.
