    Default Thread Driving Me Crazy

Does anyone else have this problem...the thread on my sewing machine is so attracted to me I can hardly get it off of me! I know that sounds really crazy but it's true. You would think I had glue on my fingers or something. I sling my hands trying to get the threads off and it just doesn't want to leave me. If anyone has a solution for this problem please let me know.

Also, for some reason my machine seems like it sucks the thread back. Let me explain this one also. When I cut my thread at the end of sewing I pull both threads to the back of my machine but if I don't pull about 6-8 inches of thread, which I feel is a waste, then when I start sewing again the machine kinda takes the thread back leaving not much of a top thread tail and a lot of times pulls it right back thru the needle and I have to stop and thread my needle again. It is so frustrating. I don't remember having this problem before. I've only picked up sewing again last April and it had been years but I think I would remember something like that. And the tutorials I watch it doesn't look like they pull that much thread. Anyone got this problem and a solution?

Thanks all for listening to me. Hope someone will be able to help me.

Gaylynn, I don't know about your thread sucking machine, lol that sounds like a machine from the 'Black Lagoon'.

But, I find that I have to:
A ~ Put lotion or cream on my hands and work it in really well because my hands are so rough from the dry climate here in Utah.
B ~ Have a designated 'Thread Catcher' mine is a fabric box I made just for that purpose. And
C ~ Use a lint roller on me after every sewing session. Sometimes no matter what you do, thread just loves you.

    Hi
My machine does that sometimes too. Try holding both threads as you start to sew the first few stitches. That worked for me, hope it helps you. Not sure what to do about the static cling,,, do you use 100% cotton thread? I find that the polyester mix has more cling.
Good luck & let me know if this helps

I see you are in Texas - could it be low humidity causing the threads to stick to you? Kinda like static cling?

For the thread ends, you can use leaders and enders - small pieces of fabric to start and stop sewing on - keeps thread tails to a minimum and if you are doing triangles, it will keep your machine from "eating" the starting corner. Some people actually complete another quilt at the same time as their leaders and enders. You can also hold on to the thread ends until you have sewn a couple of stitches - wouldn't have to pull it out so far to begin with.

Hope some of this helps. Welcome to the forum!

are you making sure the (take up lever?) the arm thingy that is above the needle that goes up and down , is always in the up position when you stop sewing. It needs to be all the way up or it will pull the thread back as it goes up on your first stitch.
there are thread conditioners that help with static cling, or set a bowl of water in front of the heat register to add some humidity to your room. That might help with the clingy thread

    Tried this already.

How much thread do you pull to the back?

I just got a humidifier and put in the sewing room. Mostly for my dry eyes, doctor recommended, but maybe it will help with the thread.

I am iun Houston and after I sew I have threads stuck to the belly area on my shirt and the tops of my legs, basically like I've been sitting with a pile of thread on me. It gets worse if I use any bastic spray during my time in the sewing room - then even the lint roller has trouble with it. Not sure if it's the humidity or what, but I always plan on having to change my clothes before I go out after I've been sewing.

My machine used to suck the threads back too, so I do pull 3 or 4 inches out and hold it with one hand until I get a few stitches secrured OR I sew on and off a spider (scrap piece) so it's mor like chain piecing even though I'm only sewing one thing.
