The Gourmet Quilter has a number of videos on youtube. Here's one, you can seach her others: How to join up Quilt as you Go blocks and borders - Quilting Tips & Techniques 074 - YouTube With this method, you would make each block, quilt and then cut all layers to the same size. A narrow sashing is used on the backside to connect the blocks, with a wider sashing on the front side. It's a very each technique.

Rose Smith also has a similar technique and videos on youtube. Quilt As You Go Machine Sewn Only Video - YouTube
I haven't tried this method, but you need to have your backing fabric larger after the block is quilted and she has a similar method of joining blocks.

I like doing the quilt as you go. I wouldn't try anything larger than a twin size. Mine got pretty heavy to handle by the time I was nearing the end. A baby quilt or lap size would be perfect. I don't have the room or the strength to make a QAYG any bigger.
