Simple easy quilts
I want to start making quilts for one of our homeless shelters. I have made a few quilts but they are too detailed. i am looking for suggestions for a really easy and simple quilt pattern that i am able to mass produce in a hurry. We live in Winnipeg, Manitoba where it gets soooo cold in the winter. Todays high is -25 fehrenheit. Yikes. Thanks for your help

Re: Simple easy quilts
The layer cake quilt is super fast. It could even be made cutting your own scraps into 10 inch pieces, to save money on lots of quilts.

Re: Simple easy quilts
I found the double slice layer cake to be quick and easy. Also, just making a simple quilt out of charm squares sewed together in rows goes together quickly for me.

Re: Simple easy quilts
Strip quilts would be really fast and could do them as a quilt as you go. You can vary the size of the strips to make it more interesting or to fit your stash better.
Brrr is that cold - I will stop complaining about our 15 that feels like 5.......

Re: Simple easy quilts
If I were going to mass produce for the homeless, I'd probably just use plain fabric and put two WOF together, layer it and envelope stitch, turn and then do a wide criss-cross quilting across the top. We're looking at warmth, comfort, and not necessarily beauty here. What a wonderful thing you are doing.

Sandy has the right idea,, it might be a good way to practice FMQ! If you like something to keep your mind busy and fun... I just love Summer in the Park.. tutorial here.. can't get enough of that one,,it can be made different each time, use up scrpas and is very forgiving... also the strip piecing is something I LOVE!!

Re: Simple easy quilts
Thank you everyone for your feedback. My fabric store is having a 50% off sale on Thursday. I will be shopping. Thanks again and have a very Happy New Year everyone

Re: Simple easy quilts
I agree with Sandy. You could even go to a resale shop and use 2 sheets layered with batting or a blanket.
Also, someone posted a link about crocheting plastic bags ( aka "plarn" = plastic yarn) to make mats for the homeless

Re: Simple easy quilts
Getting a panel and adding a couple of borders would make a nice quilt. For example: FInished... - Country Sampler Quilts

Re: Simple easy quilts
Our church does quilts for World Relief. The churches use mostly donated fabric and cut it into squares. It is put together in the most pleasing pattern available. Most of the quilting ladies are retired and have all kinds of ideas. You might want to stop in at a church quilt session and pick up ideas from them. They are fast and produce lots of quilts for those in need. Good luck with your project.

Re: Simple easy quilts
Sandy has a great idea. If you want something pieced, I would do a simple turning twenty, or sashed square, something along those lines, with the least amount of detail, or a simple strip quilt used from scraps if you have a lot of them.

Re: Simple easy quilts
Use fleece for the back, and make a placemat version.. No binding. I made a few of those for Quilt for kids.. I used 12 inch blocks for the front.. Sorry for the incomplete sentences. Thinking as I type. :)

Re: Simple easy quilts
Thank you everyone for your suggestions, they are great. I'm anxious to get started. Just have to share a little story. My grandgt and i went to the shelter this afternoon to drop off touques, mitts and scarves. There was a group of people standing outside in -25 fehrenheit weather who were obviously residents of the shelter. As we walked by to return to the car, we were greeted with Happy New Year wishes. Thank you and God bless my friends. I would also like to wish Happy New Year to all of you, my quilting family.

Re: Simple easy quilts
You could reuse curtains from the charity shop. Our local shop sells pairs of curtains for 99p! I buy lots of them because I'm a Residential Landlord and supply curtains in my houses. Quick wash and they're refreshed and ready to use. I've often thought some of them would make good quilts. I was thinking of the animals here, because I think they'd need slightly thicker and hardwearing fabric as would, I imagine, anyone on the streets.
