    Default carpenter's star opinion needed

Ihave just completed the center of my carpenter star top. Currently it 45x45. I am making it to go on my dining room wall, so I dont need a huge border. I thought about a piano key boeder, double boeder with thd red and gray, but I just cannot decide what to do. What are your thoughts?

Nice quilt. I really like the colors. I would go with just the grey and then red, or red and then grey borders. I think the piano key border would be too busy and take away from your star. Just my opinion, I'm sure it'll look great whatever you decide.

I agree with Cil; just a couple of plain gray and red borders would really set your star off so nicely. Your star is beautiful! Love the 3-D effect.

I also agree, a narrow gray border with a wider red border. It is going to be a gorgeous wallhanging.

Make that 4 who all say the same thing. The center should be the focus, the rest should frame it!

If you want a little more to the border than just solid strips, you could add a red cornerstone in the corner of each grey strip, and visa versa for the red strip with grey corners. Or you could just do one border to keep it from getting larger than you want. A red border with grey corners.
That would be simple enough not to pull away from the stunning star, but give you a bit of a different look as well.

I knew I came to the right place. Has anyone used susie's magic binding? I am now thinking maybe a narrow gray border and using ghe red as the focus binding with white as the accent.

I agree that a piano key border would be too much and detract from the beautiful center. I would use a narrow (1" finished - cut it 1 1/2") as the inner border in the same white as the wheel and a 2 1/2" (finished - cut it 3") black border and also bind it in black. Your wheel in the center should be the focal point. I know it's a temptation to doll it up, but with a piece like this (gorgeous) you need to keep it simply elegant. You want everything that's "going on" to be the wheel. Less can be more. Barb

    Beautiful star!

As for borders, I really like a simple border on this. I think something like a piano key border might be a little too "busy" and might detract from the beauty of the star. Personally I like one thin border on the inside, maybe one inch wide, then a slightly wider outer border 2-2.5" border. Either use colors from the quilt or pick other complementary colors.

I'm sure it will look great whatever you decide!

Beautiful! This is on my to do list. I like the idea of the grey and then red binding. Please post when you've completed This is going to be a stunning wall hanging.
