I was flipping through a McCalls Quilting magazine from Jan/Feb 2013 and on page 52 came across a red/white/black quilt that is really pretty. I don't think either the red or black take it over. If you don't have the magazine, you can go online to

scroll down to News Flash and there are directions for a lap size one.
In the magazine, they give directions for a 87 1/2 by 99 1/2" inch quilt.

Love that combination, I made a black and white with pink witch is also very nice.

Above: Here's my 'Good Vibrations' quilt. I bought the fabric from M* and some of it is black and white ie you could use the fabric without the red designs from the range.
