    Default Vintage String Quilt

Hello, I just joined this morning and have a question. I found three unquilted quilt tops at my mother-in-law's house (who passed away 3 years ago). I want to quilt them but since I have never quilted before I wanted some opinions. I want to hand quilt because these are all hand pieced. I have attached a picture of the one I want to attempt first. I wanted to see what your thoughts were on the pattern I should use to quilt. Shoule I use a straight line, and if so, in which direction. Any input is welcome! I hope the picture attached correctly!

    Thanks,
    Susie

Honestly, chica, I'd hold onto them until I gained a few years of experience under my belt.
Or send them out to a professional long armer. MSQS offers this service, or a local quilt shop may be able to direct you to one, in your location.
    I wouldn't, nor couldn't.
(Let's just say, my MIL and I tolerated each other) and I just got this weird cramp in my left leg that I have NEVER had before....
    JEEZ. I'm NOT kidding!
I really need to get off the exclamation point.
It may give people the idea that I'm bright and cheerful all the time....

If you are hand quilting strip quilts, I would go with straight line quilting - either down the center of each strip or cross-hatch the squares( X's in each of the squares). Have fun! Since you MIL has already passed, I am sure she and your DH will appreciate whatever you do since you are completing them and they can be used and loved in her memory!
    Happy Quilting!

Couple of home remedies are: walk on a cold floor (odd, but seems to work) and eat a banana or drink a little apple cider vinegar.

Another thing for leg cramps is Tums or Rolaids. They are both full of calcium and lack of calcium can cause the cramps. The banana has potassium in it and the lack of that can also be the culprit.
If you take a lot of naproxin sodium it can be the cause, try switching to tylenol instead of advil to see if that is the problem.

Can you tell that has been a problem with me, LOL?

Forgot to say, I recently did some big stitch quilting using embroidery thread and it turned out well. I think I would just do a straight stitch in a grid, either on a diagonal or a straight up, down and side to side.

Thanks all so much for the comments. We think the quilt tops actually were pieced by my husband's grandmother because my MIL never did any that we are aware of. His grandmother lived with them as my husband was growing up. I feel pretty inspired to do this because I never knew my own grandparents and I only knew my husbands for a short time. I know he will appreciate me doing this and I will also be honoring her by quilting them. New York Sue, I understand what you are saying about me waiting to do this until I have quilting under my belt. I kind of think that since these are such "rustic" quilt tops maybe it will be o.k. if my first quilting is kind of "rustic" as well. I may be totally off base in thinking that, but I feel that these quilts were being made to use for comforts rather than as show pieces. Are there any thoughts on this? I know that hand quilting is the way to go rather than machine quilting. I just feel that is the right thing to do in my heart. Thanks so much for replying to a newbie!!

Hey, Susie - Welcome to the forum. I wish you could see some of the hand quilting that I have on old quilts I've picked up through the years. I would say go for it and enjoy the process along the way. What better project on which to wet your teeth.
    Be warned. I am BORED.
    This could be dangerous.

When you get cold just go stand in the corner.
    They are usually 90 degrees.

A giraffe's coffee would be cold by the time it reached the bottom of his throat.
Ever think about that? No? You only think about yourself??

Hi, Susie, and welcome to the Forum from Connecticut!
I'm not a hand-quilter, so I have no advice for you there. But I can tell you that a few years ago after my DH's aunt died, I was given all of her sewing supplies and fabric, including 5 pieced quilt tops, along with batting and backing fabric enough to finish them. I stumbled onto the M*QC website and tutorials and this wonderful forum full of talented folks who are more than willing to share their expertise, their love of quilting, and their friendship. And now I am totally addicted to it!
