As I am in my sewing room whacking out tumblers, I keep thinking up new questions to ask. Ok, when you ladies are putting a white fabric into your quilt in the blocks, or backing, do you like muslin, Kona cotton, or what fabric do you prefer? I am new at quilting and just chock full of question?
Most muslin isn't white, it's more of a cream color. I use Kona or Bella white a lot of the time. Sometimes I will use muslin for charity quilts. I normally try to match the weight of the fabrics pretty closely and muslin just isn't as heavy as good quilting cotton.
I have mostly used Bella White. I think it is Jean who has posted a pic of various whites for shade comparison. While I like the look of white in a quilt, I find it hard to work with because it's so unforgiving! Any stray threads or seams pressed the wrong way just stand out so much, to me anyway.
For white I like Kona.
I used Kona Snow on a quilt and even though the batting was white it was still thin enough that you could see some of the seams. Next time I am going to try Moda Bella in the hopes it will be a little thicker (less transparent).
I prefer to use a white on white fabric instead of a solid white.
I think the weight is the key! Kona is a bit heavier than others, in my estimation.
Watch the Kona and Bella Snow colors. They are DEFINITELY not the same or interchangeable! One looks like snow ( Kona) and the other like yellow snow ( Bella)! Be forewarned!

No, you are right, the Bella Snow is much more yellow. They are just shades of off white.Quote:

I like the idea of using white on white rather than plain white--that's a good idea.
I used Kona white on the quilt I made and was very happy with it.
I just finished a red/white pinwheel quilt. I used Kona, it is much nicer than the muslin, even the bleached. I use muslin for small projects, like tablerunners. The Kona is much pricier than other options, but with my Hobby Lobby 40%coupon, I buy up what I can, when I can.
This was wide backing fabric but was from Joanne and it had been pre-washed. I might not have had any problem with it in the top but since it was on the bottom it sure made a mess.Quote:

Yeah, white does come in many shades. I buy at Joanns either Kona or Legacy Studio when I have a 50% off coupon and get 4 yards. THe key then is..when I use it, I keep all the fabrics I use for a quilt in a basket until I am done with the quilt. That way, I always have the fabric I have used from the start and don't have to worry about using different shades.
That's what I started doing...keeping all my whites separated, and the ones I am using for a quilt...stay together until I am done.
I seem to use a lit of Kona White....mostly for inner borders and strips... But I do love a really pretty WOW for certain kinds of quilts...
If I use a white backing, it is Kona White.
Once find a 30's and Kona Snow... It looked pretty good.
