I need a 10 inch unfinished block or a 91/2 inch finished block pattern. I have searched all over for one and can't find one. Does anyone have any ideas or links they can share?

there are some here
Blocks by Size B_7" - 11"
Thanks but I looked there already and they are finished sizes. I need a 9 1/2 inch finished size or a 10 inch unfinished size. I found one there I really liked and went ahead and made six of them and then realized they were finished sizing......:( They are pretty but won't fit with my other blocks. I can't cut them down because they have points and I would loose them in the seams......back to the drawing board.
did you try quilter cache.... lots there, just a thought..
My brain won't work well in that situation. LOL!!! Actually I have been sitting here trying to figure it out on paper......I have a headache now.....I was just hoping for something simple and straight forward but I guess that aint' going to happen......sigh.....
This is the block I really like. But it finishes at 10" and not 9 1/2"
Goshen Star
On a few of my quilts, some of the blocks had to be framed to fill in their space.
Here's part of my Christmas quilt, if you look at the santa block, it has red spacers to fill in the extra holes.

I'm working on this one right now, and it has frames around all the blocks with background fabric. This is my local quilt shop. Scroll down to the Taos block of the month and you'll see what it turns out like. The actual blocks end at the points, then white strips are added to each side.

You'd need a block that finishes at 9 inches or less instead of 10 to be able to do this.
That is a tough one Alana! But WOW so beautiful!
Since each block is made from 3 smaller blocks, and you only need 1/2" overall smaller, maybe try just shaving 1/8" off each square and rectangle before you sew them?
for this one you could try trimming the corner half square triangles down a quarter of an inch, and redo the remaining pink rectangle pieces. Keep the white star measurements the same, but make the pink pieces 1/4 inch shorter, subtracting from the long side instead of short. Would that work?
That would be 2 1/2 by 4 1/4 pieces of color 1, white pieces would all be the same, and so would the triangles. Just cut the triangles to 4 1/4 instead of 4 1/2
I've thought of that too. I am going to try sewing them together and see what happens. Otherwise I will just go with a different 9 inch and cut my embroidered blocks down to fit a 9 inch finished size.
The 1/8" may work too. I'll get back to you....
Thanks for all your help.
I think I may try this and see what happens. Thanks for your help....I really appreciate this.
Just a thought....

just do a framed nine patch. And trim the frame part till it meets your requirements.
Oh wait - how about an hour glass or quarter square triangle block? Just make it large then trim down and it will form a secondary pattern when alternated with your embroidered blocks.
This is what I'm trying to do

Here's an example: Sands of Time Hourglass with the Quarter Square Triangles
maybe you could add a border to the white ones you have already to make them finish at 10
This is my picture of the blocks I have made to go with the embroidered blocks I want to put together. Unfortunately my block is a half inch larger than the embroidered block. So I have to do the math and figure out how I can shorten the block size. Sandy was kind enough to give me a link to an explanation on how to do that so I will give it a shot or I just may go with the churn dash block. I'm just so ticked at the whole thing right now, I think I will look at it again tomorrow.
Stunning!! I hope you can get this worked out in the morning with fresh eyes, this is beautiful.
Good luck

What if you cut down and then sash the embroidery blocks? From the pic (which is stunning btw), it looks like you would have room to trim those blocks and then do a narrow sashing. Or do a different setting, so that they are offset and don't have to be the same size? It might not be the look you were going for, but I like the blocks that you have already done as well as the embroidered ones!
Sorry I got confused earlier, I understand now :) I think Lisa's idea is good! Love the embroidery, urban threads?
Thought of that too but the embroidery blocks are 10 inch square and if I want to sash around both blocks, it still wouldn't fit because the star block is 10 1/2 inches square and I really can't trim them back or I will loose the points. I really am leaning toward the Friendship Star or the Churn Dash. I think either one will look great. Even though I am in love with the other I can always make another quilt from those blocks.
See!!! I knew this forum was marvelous!!!! I got all kinds of info and help to get me on my way again......You guys are the bestest ever!!!!!
Hugs to you all!!
You could make a nine patch using 2.5" squares then border with 2.5" strips then trim to 9.5
I think you can just choose a block and do the math to make it what you want . I do that all the time if we are talking about the same thing. I have a book of 501 blocks and another 250 blocks and they all make a 12,1/2 x 12,1/2 on unfinished block. I always think in terms of squares vs. rows. I take my marker and draw lines ( on the picture in the book) to make the number of squares it would take to make that block the size I want. For instance...I am currently making pillows for my living room...I want them 16x16" finished. So I would need 4 squares across and 4 down. I find a block pattern that can be altered into squares (like if they have a flying geese or other piece in the block.. I can't alter that.) I look and draw the squares out on the page. Even if the pattern says to cut a 5"x 5" squares, I will alter that into 2 - 2,1/2x2,1/2 squares. I don't ever work with bias so I never do triangles... I always use HST for the triangle if I need one. Once I have it drawn out, I can alter still more...for a 16x16 I can use either 4rows by 4 rows of 4" squares (finished) or I can do 8 rows by 8 rows of 2" squares. Once I figure all I need, I just add 1/2 is everything and then cut. Sounds complicated, but it isn't once you do it once. If there is a larger area, I always cut that down into squares to equal the size I want. Like if there was a 8"x4" piece...and I was working with 4" squares... instead of cutting 8x4 piece, I'd cut 2, 4x4 pieces so that they would now fit into the math formula of squares. Hope this helps... let me know and I can maybe revise my words better!
off top of my head... if you want a 9,1/2x9,1/2 finished, you'd want 3 rows across by 3 rows down .The equation you'd need to use to break into squares would be 9,1/2 divided by 3 and then you'd add 1/2 to each measurement for the seams and cut squares that measurement x that measurement (don't have a calculator with me!)
