    Default Sun Bonnet Sue Quilts

I have been interested in Sun Bonnet Sue Quilts for a number of years. My DH Terry's grandma made a Sun Bonnet Sue quilt top 45-50 yrs ago, but it was never quilted. My MIL gave me the quilt top several years ago, and I haven't done anything with it. I was thinking about making pillows with the top, and then making a quilt for my great niece who loves re-runs of Little House On the Prairie, so I am thinking about making the quilt for her, along with the pillows ( from the older quilt. ) Because the quilt top is so old, I am afraid to do much with it. I suppose I should wash it too....Has anyone had this experience ?

I ran across a magazine that was published in 2005, called Quilt Almanac ( by the editors of Quilt magazine ) with a Sun Bonnet Sue pattern along with instructions.

My question ( sorry about going on and on ) is has anyone made one of these quilts, and if so, would you share any info for me ? The magazine said that this is a great pattern for a beginner.....and I really would like an opinion, is it really a good pattern for someone who has only made a couple of quilted bags, and a runner ? ( I am just getting ready to make another bag for my sis-in-law for her B-day.

If anyone has any advice, I would appreciate it.

35 years ago I made one from my newborn daughter. I appliqued Sun Bonnet Sue and her brother onto white squares, then sewed the squares into a crib size quilt. That was before I knew anything about quilting and just did it by my own creation! Then I used a Mickey Mouse print as the back and a white ruffle around it. I didn't know about sashing so I just sewed all the squares together. I think they were about 6x6 inch squares..maybe 8x8 at the largest. I cut out the pieces and appliqued them onto the white with interfacing behind it.

I just bought a pattern for one, but it is with little Hawaiian boys and girls in aloha shirts and muu-muus.

    Thanks.....
The only"quilt" I made was a memory quilt for my dad.....in1994. When he died, I gave each one of the family members a 12 x 12 inch square, some markers and asked them to "draw" a memory of Grandpa for me, and when they were done to bring me their "square". I then sewed them together, ranging from My mom to us three girls and then the 12 grandkids, and the kids made a Square for dad's beloved cat and dog too....I then took some Christmas flannel and sewed it to the back ( Christmas was dad's favorite holiday ) .....when I took it to the funeral home, I was just going to lay it in the casket with daddy, and the funeral director who was a good friend of his, told me to wait, and he came back with two Plant stands, a 1x3 pc. of wood and some thumb tacks. He placed the plants stands about 24 inches apart, and then sat down, and put the "quilt" on the 1x3 board, placing thumb tacks every 6-10 inches. when he was done, he placed the 1 x 3 board across the plant stands.....so that the "quilt" was hanging....
When this funeral director turned around, he hugged me, and told me he had never seen such a wonderful tribute.

This was the first ( and only ) quilt I made....and 19 yrs later, my interest has peaked to make some quilts.
Again, thanks so much for your info

Someone made a darling Sun Bonnet Sue quilt for the IQ2 contest. I think you can still access the photos of the entries.

Copied from the IQ2 entry page on Facebook. You can see all the comments made about it.
