Default What do you think would happen...

I have some yardage that is pre washed and some fat quarters that are NOT prewashed. I am going to be making some decorative throw pillows for my living room....probably about 16x16" or so. If I use the FQ's to make a pinwheel with a solid pre washed yardage as the contrasting part...what do you think will happen? I am thinking that the FQ's would do a little crinkle and the yardage would not...but the crinkle would give some dimension to the block against the smooth yardage part and maybe make the pinwheel pop a bit. Or if I make a star out of the FQ's against the smooth yardage...the star would pop a bit. Do you think that would happen or would the FQ shrinkage pull the yardage and look a mess? Any ideas?

I don't think you'll see a big difference. Nothing that would make you take note of the difference to someone who didnt know what had been done.

I wouldn't worry about it! Will you be doing any quilting on the pillow top? I think I would do some SITD; that will really help your colored fabrics stand up!

Probably true. I guess I am just looking for dimension. MY living room is kind of "included" with the dinning area and the family room with the kitchen just right there.. I have 2 walls, one with the fireplace on it and a curio cabinet and that's all that will fit and the other wall is window and the front door right there! So I don't have much area or space to do decoration and get some color/design in the room. THat is why I was hoping something like this might "bring out" the color in the pillows.

I would WANT this to happen! I am trying to bring color and some design/decoration to a room that doesn't have much area to work with and is dark...dark brown sofa and love seat, dark red/brown fireplace. I was hoping this would happen to give some pop to the color and be seen better.

Pie don 'to think there will be much of a difference, either.... Especially if both fabrics are of good quality....

I could never keep washed and unwashed separate, so I gave up, and now I don't bother with pre-washing.... It takes too long to wash, dry and iron. It all..... You know, it could be that I am just plain lazy.... You think?

I do wash most fabric when it comes in the house. I do not wash precuts smaller than fat quarters. I usually do wash fat quarters and sometimes lose a bit of size when I do. I would rather it shrink first rather than after it is quilted especially since they often don't just shrink they tend to shift/warp/distort.
I wash, dry and fold but don't iron until I am ready to use the fabric. At that point I starch and then iron. No need to iron it twice.

I am no expert but have no problems doing things this way.

That's how I do it. But in this case.. I want the pucker look on some of the pieces in the block... I think that would give a good dimensional look to the pillow.

I have mixed prewashed and unwashed fabric in quilts. Once the finished quilt is washed there is no noticeable difference between the two.

If you want one section to have a different texture, you can make that happen with your quilting.
