Sash Or No Sash?

Hello fav quilters!

Your girl, Lyric, just learned of the D9P quilt. (Don'cha just love the abbreviations? Makes me feel like I know something, LOL). Just when I thought I had a fav quilt pattern I find yet another . . :D. I think what I am going to do is make a list of quilts I want to tackle to bring some order to myself, geesh. The disappearing nine patch will be at the top for sure. Looks to me like one beautiful quilt may be made from it looking laborious but not being so.

Okay, so one of the quilts here, the quiltist decided to sash it and folk were commenting on how it made the quilt "pop" and other positive comments. Being new to quilting for some reason additing the sash SEEMS a lot of work (but I'll bet it is not).

So tell me, how do YOU decide when/if to apply sashes to your quilts?

I saw your comment on the other thread today and I can't decide what I like better either! I have done two, both baby quilts and didn't sash. here is one.

There are so many ways to do the d9p patch that I halt and don't start. lol You might want to join the d9p group to check out what other member have done.

I usually do sash but. . . If the blocks are supposed to form a secondary pattern then I don't. The first picture is a Periwinkle quilt that I am working on. The colored pieces form one pattern and the white fabrics form a secondary pattern; in this case an octagon. In the second picture, which is NOT my quilt but I am working on one like it, would lose the look it is going for if the blocks were sashed.

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Depends on the block.

I agree with Auntpiggylpn - sashing depends on the pattern. If sashing is going to break up a pattern that I want to see in a quilt then I don't do it. If sashing helps to emphasize the blocks then I use it. I don't think there are any hard and fast rules. Each quilt is a work of art and each artist can be creative and make the quilt just the way they want to. Good luck - please post pictures of your quilt - we'd love to see it.

It really does depend on the block and the quilt. The X & O quilt didn't need it and would break up the intended pattern, yet the circle quilt looked better sashed, IMO.

Sometimes, (most always IMHO), the pic needs a frame!
Especially, with a busy block like a DP9!
But, then again, I'm newish....

I am like the others, it depends on the block….. some block have really cool secondary patterns that come out once they are together and sometimes I like to do sashing because it makes the blocks show up.

I like them either way.....have not decided yet whether or not I will sash the one I've been working on. If I want it larger, I might.

Like others have said, it depends on the pattern. My current project is a double Irish chain which would not look well with sashing.

I think it depends on the quilt. Sometimes quilts sparkle more without sashing, sometimes they pop more with sashing. I think sampler quilts look better with sashing, but One Block Wonders simply cannot have sashing. In between, it becomes a personal design choice.

Again like everyone says some patterns need to be framed , some it would ruin the whole effect to frame.

I seldom sash my quilts. It's hard for me to explain why...I try to sense what the quilt needs. I don't put borders on all my quilts either.

Sashing is like framing a picture. It calls attention to each individual block. If this is what you are going for, then sashing is something for you to try. Sashing is also a good way to add size to a quilt without trying to do it all with the borders. Once again, it's personal preference.

Here are a couple of the D9P's I've done - one sashed and set on point, one not. I love them both ways and deciding which depends on my mood at the time. I love prints vs solids, so my quilts can tend to be pretty because I just can't narrow down my selections :) . I always use at least the same color (usually the same print) for the center square of the original 9 patch. Make a few blocks, lay them out and take pics with the blocks together, and then separated on different color backgrounds to get an idea of how you like it.

Sashing really comes in great when doing a block swap. Not everyone's block is the right size. Cutting sashing a little to big, then trimming down to the correct size can solve a lot of problems of the blocks not being the right size. I have been in swaps where the unfinished size was suppose to be 12 1/2". The smallest was 11 1/4" and the largest was 13 1/2". Also, the sampler quilts look better sashed that way it frames the block and separates it from the next block.

I decide to sash usually if I am making a quilt with blocks and I want the blocks to really stand out.

It really depends on the pattern. Do I want the blocks to stand out individually, do I need to put something between the blocks to break up color/pattern, etc. I think everyone has posted great pics on going either way.

You betcha. I am sure at least a couple of the ladies here have read me and know that I will :icon_popcorn:, be it good, bad, or bugly (that's, butt ugly). Finishing up some sewing projects and need to order a rubber bobbin winder thingy Minnesota Treadle for my treadle. For some reason I don't want to tackle a quilt on my hand crank though I did read here that at least one of us uses hers (or she did at one time). If I don't order the part soon I will go ahead and start on my lil Hand Crank Sewing Machine Tabitha.
