Making flying geese with long sides?
Merry Christmas!
The other day I saw a quilt that was made with strips of a jelly roll sewn together almost like a jelly roll race quilt but then they had cut longways up the quilt and inserted a strip of flying geese which had long sides pieces of fabric allowing them to be offset from row to row.
The first set was centered, then the next was right aligned, the next was centered, then left aligned.
I am still very new to working with triangles in my quilts and I've made some "regular" flying geese but I don't know how to make flying geese where the side fabric is longer other than just sewing on a block of matching fabric to the side of a standard flying goose.
Does anyone know if there is a better way to do this?
Here is a quick and dirty picture I made of what I am trying to describe. In my picture, much like in my quilts, the points don't line up exactly, but pretend they do.
Not getting much sewing done lately. #Parenting

I don't know if this will work but, I think if you take a rectangle of 2.5 x 5 which will be the triange part, then you will be able to attach the end of the jelly roll strip using the diagonal seam method it should work.
After typing this, I am thinking you may need to start with a 2.5 x 4.5 rectangle. I will try to test it out after I get back from my brothers for Christmas dinner.

You could sew a square diagonally on the end of two strips (stitch and flip), then sew the strips together so the triangles meet and form the peak, varying the length of the strips to get the staggered effect when trimmed.

I'd say lay out some in paper - then when you join strips to square, just measure the length of the strip you are attaching to vary the spacing.
I use this method, not sure what it's called. You join a strip to a square, then cut on the diagonal, removing the excess piece

Re: Making flying geese with long sides?
I did this for a quilt border many years afo and I did it with paperr peicing. If you can draw a six inch strip of exactly what you want and make many copies of it it is really easy and all your points will match.

You could do a prairie point then applique it down on a jelly roll strip.
