Monofilament thread...anyone, anyone?
I've got to finish off my GD Minnie Mouse quilt today, and am considering a quick run to JoAnns for monofilament thread. I have never used this before. I'm wondering if my Featherweight can handle it....
Also, is it meant to be used as bobbin thread, as well?
Any advice appreciated!
Re: Monofilament thread...anyone, anyone?
I have tried LOTS of monofilaments. Not in the bobbin though, I only use regular thread in the bobbin.
In my trials, the most invisible is YLI but it is SO thin I find it hard to work with so I only use it on very small projects. Gutterman has had the least breakage for me, but it's thicker and not nearly as invisible as the YLI. The Sulky at Joann did not work well for me, lots of breakage. But that may be due to me or my machine (Babylock) as I know lots of people like Sulky.
Re: Monofilament thread...anyone, anyone?
I have used it in placemats and it worked fine. I have two different brands, YLI is one of them and it works well. I used it on the top and cotton thread in the bobbin.

Thanks, guys!
I'm off to JoAnns....
:icon_rolleyes:
Re: Monofilament thread...anyone, anyone?
I used it with my regular machine, both top and bottom threads and it worked great. Auricle was the brand I used. I don't think my featherweight would like it on the bobbin though. Oh, and I used it only for Fmq.
Re: Monofilament thread...anyone, anyone?
I like the Guterman better than other also - less breakage while working, though it is thicker and a little more stiff. I use it mostly for placemats and table runners, in the bobbin as well as the top thread.
The thinner it is the more liekly it is to stretch or break in the machine IMHO. I have an older Kenmore.
Re: Monofilament thread...anyone, anyone?
I don't use mono and I don't think it should ever be used in anything made for a child. In the past melting has been an issue in the dryer. If you choose to use it, the bobbin should be your regular sewing thread.
Re: Monofilament thread...anyone, anyone?
I used it to stitch in the ditch a quilt that I just finished. I used it in the top and in the bobbin. It did break several times and was hard to handle, but it was worth it because it did not show up on multicolor fabrics--it blended with EVERYTHING. My understanding is that nylon melts at a much lower temperature than the other kind (polyester monofiliment) and that if you have a choice the polyester thread is the one to get. Before I began I did a lot of test stitching and did lower the upper tension a bit. Also, sew slowly and just accept that you will probably have a few times when your thread breaks.
Re: Monofilament thread...anyone, anyone?
I really like it, but I just can't see it, which I guess is the point.... I feel as if I am grasping for something that really isn't there. I would LOVE to use it... I love what it does..... I might try again, now that I am definitely trying to learn to FMQ,
Re: Monofilament thread...anyone, anyone?
I don't like it. I find it hard to work with.
Re: Monofilament thread...anyone, anyone?
I don't have a Featherweight, but I've used Sulky in both the upper thread and in the bobbin with no problem. I did use a different needle though. I think it was an embroidery needle, something with a larger eye to prevent breakage.
Re: Monofilament thread...anyone, anyone?
Thanks for all the advice, guys!
I purchased the Sulky, then made a stop at my repair shop for bobbins. After speaking with my repair woman, I decided to abandon my idea for now. It's really not meant for a child's quilt, for sure.
I started ditch quilting and that wasn't going terribly well, either. Bad sewing mojo, today.
I ended up hand tying the blocks, and sewed a 1/4" inside of the outside border, for stabilization.
It looks sweet and 'old school', and will be a perfect with a stuffed Minnie Mouse, (I hope).
The binding is on, I just have to hand tack it down, launder, light press, and wrap it up with Minnie!
Re: Monofilament thread...anyone, anyone?
I failed to see this was for a child's quilt and I doubt I'd use it for that either. When I used it, it was for a wall hanging I made for my mom and it worked perfect for that.

JEEZ. You two, 'bubba' and 'Bubby' have my head swingin'.
Note to self.... Capital letter.

My Joann's carries the sulky brand, and it worked just fine for my IQ quilt. I used superior so fine in the bobbin.
