Re: Hand Trapunto Anyone?
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, Lyric . . . maybe something to study and aspire to??????? Not in my house. 'Course it is way too fussy for me.
It is beautiful. See if you can find a book that describes 'how to'.

Re: Hand Trapunto Anyone?
I actually don't think this is trapunto. It looks like it because of the density of the surrounding quilting. I just saw another quilt on FB, that looked like trapunto, but the quilter explained that it only looked like that because of the way it was quilted. Densely in the area surrounding the focal point.
Like Sandy, not gonna happen here...I quilt for speed since most of what I make is for the PICU. No time for that kind of fussiness. But if you want to aspire to it...go for it.
Re: Hand Trapunto Anyone?
I learned a new word. I've never heard of trapunto. Also not something I'd aspire to do. JCY
Re: Hand Trapunto Anyone?
I don't do hand trapunto, and haven't tried machine trapunto yet, but recently discovered that my brother-in-law does all of his trapunto by hand! Now of course, he had no idea it was called trapunto, just that it was how he was taught to make a baby blanket lol But he buys those baby panels and stitches them by hand. Who knew a rough and tough "manly man" carpenter would do something as delicate as hand stitching, and trapunto at that? I figured he did it all by machine, getting it done as quick and painless as possible lol I knew he did trapunto (figured out what it was called about 6 months ago!) but didn't quite know how as there are a few different ways to do it, so finally curiosity got the best of me and I asked! He uses a high-loft batting first, stitches the outlines of whatever pieces he wants to be "puffy", then trims off the excess, adds a piece of regular batting after that and then finishes his quilting all over. He even binds them with lace! If you saw my BIL you would never believe he makes these beautiful, delicate quilts as he's a little like Tim "The Toolman" Taylor, mixed in with some Jim Belushi lol
Re: Hand Trapunto Anyone?
I have done trapunto on a few projects over the years. The last trapunto I did was on an angel doll that I made a few years back. It was an interesting project and she came end up with a rather surprised looking expression in the end. hehehe. First trapunto was way back in the day when I did fluer de lis on some curtain toppers. That was when I had time to kill.
It is wonderful way to add interest to any quilt. I occasionally will "stuff" an applique and tell myself that it is trapunto. another giggle from me.
Re: Hand Trapunto Anyone?
Interesting comments and shares, ladies. Thanks for taking the time. Yeah, that piece I pinned is stunning! After looking at it just now perhaps it is embroidery.
Re: Hand Trapunto Anyone?
Lyric, maybe for next year you need a little roadside stand at your farm and sell Home Grown Tomatoes and then save the proceeds for more seeds and . . . AN EMBROIDERY machine!!!
I am so anxious to see what you are going to be creating. Your imagination is running wild (I know that for a fact, because it ran by here earlier today).
Hugs!
Re: Hand Trapunto Anyone?
I sometimes do a form of hand trapunto, but not in the usual way. If you google search Shadow embroidery, that's how I do it, using a darning needle and soft springy pure wool.
Re: Hand Trapunto Anyone?
Aww Booh:
We're off-the-grid! It would have to be a treadle embroidery machine, bwahhhhh. Oh, and get this . . . I wanted an embroidery sewing machine for years. Kept my eyes on Husqvarna, right???? Finally got one. Wooooo whoooo. Then, . . . drum roll . . . I married. Married a man from West Virginia, hills and hollers. He purchased a couple acres, moved me from a way cool island (his kids loved visiting) and now we live out in the kuntry . . . no 'lectricity (on purpose), I sold my husky, purchased the Minnesota treadle and two Sears hand cranks. One for me and one for his daughter whom I refer to as my "Noodlebump".
Sigh . . .

Oh, wait . . . we don't live in WV now. Awww shucks, we coulda visited, quilted and stuff. Oh, and SN, did you actually know I have YET to treadle??? :o Full story here Treadle Sewing Machine | Sew And CroSew And Cro.
But, now that I am learning quilting by golly I am going to do it. No more intimidation for 2014; no ma'am. I've dusted Miss Dorcas off, oiled her up good. And then . . . giggles, realized there is this round, rubber bobbin winder thingy piece that has stretched out of proportion and I must order another.

How sweet of you to say. Alas, we get much flack about our "life". Close friends, fam. We get lots of questions. Those I don't mind so much; after all, it's a new concept to folk. Hubby gets "accused" of being umm, how do you say, a "prepper". Another asked if he were a "survivalist". Well, we do want to survive surely. We want to learn to be self-sufficient and not lean upon government entitlements. But that's another story, another time.
Re: Hand Trapunto Anyone?
Uwww, this sounds yummy, PamiPatch! I've got to look that up one day. Into my notes of to-do's it goes.
