Dingle Fold Binding

I have always used double good binding on my quilts. However.... I have been making some small bereavement quilts that are all flannel.... Flannel binding can be a little bulky....especially on small things.

I also want to make some Christmas themed mug rugs (my first), and was wondering if they are better with single gold binding.

I'm really not certain how to make single food binding.... What is the best width to cut your strips? Do you just sew the single raw edge to the quilt, then fold it over on itself? I know I should know how to do this, but I've always fine the double binding...

Edited to say ... You knew I meant Single, didn't you? Darn iPad!. I have to watch it every minute...

dingle fold/ good/ gold/ food. LOLOLOL I would iron 1/4 inch fold on one side, and then sew raw edge to quilt and when you turn it you have a clean edge to stitch down on other side.

Your thread title gave me a good giggle this morning!

I agree with Doloris. I just did my first single-fold yesterday on a mug rug. I cut strips 1 1/4", join as needed, pressed one long edge in 1/4", sewed the raw edge to the front of the mug rug, pressed it out from the item to make it easier to pull around to the back. I clip the 'nub' of binding (google Patrick Lose and watch his binding video to see this - makes the corners nice and flat) ,then folded it to the back and hand-stitched down. Very easy and looks great.

On mug rugs and small quilts and runners and the bereavement quilts I bring the backing to the front for binding. Very neat and flat method.

After laughing at title - good way to start the day!

My first question is: Why do binding in the first place? If you have a nice flannel backing, why not just fold it to the front and hem it down? That's the way I was taught when I was a teenager. Never heard of binding until after I retired and started taking quilting classes. Half the quilts I make I have hemmed instead of binding it. If I use a nice thick backing fabric like a good flannel, fleece or minkee I will hem it. There are several methods out there for reducing the bulk at the corners when doing this.

Make note to self.. don't buy an iPad lol What Doloris said and also I love using the self binding on mug rugs. It's so crisp looking and so easy to do! Fiddling with binding on such a small item was frustrating to me.

If you want to try the self binding, do it on a mug rug first so you can comfortable before your bigger projects. The first time I tried it was on a quilt and I got nervous. Now it's easy peasy:)

Did you know you can edit on ipad? Just put your finger in the place where you made an error, and it places the cursor in a word so you can erase and retype. And I would advise going to settings and turning off auto correct. For every thing it corrects, it makes 5 mistakes!

We figured out the single, but did you mean fold, gold, food, good or FOLD! Things can get crazy with these little tap keypads.

And I would just look over your post to catch those mistakes before you post! Please don't be offended by my advice, but it does get difficult to read your posts at times. I had to teach my sister how to edit on her ipad, she didn't know you could do that.

I do know how to edit on my iPad... But the forum won't allow you to change a title.

Believe it or not, I do check most posts.... But, I miss things.... Sometimes it is because I just didn't see it... I have a very severe astigmatism, which makes it hard for me to focus quickly.... My vision...corrected with ocular implanted..is never more than 20/50, with the occasional 20/40 thrown in.

IPadisms can be embarrassing.... There are timed when the iPad will throw in a word that has no meaning within the context if a sentence.

No of fence taken.... I know it is a problem, and try to avoid those glitches when I can... But I know they are going to happen....

Glad you aren't offended! I use an ipad all the time and usually type something wrong, sometimes the same letters get typed wrong every time! I know about the titles! If that gets messed up, there's no fixing that!

I might do closer to 21/2in., because my quarter inch is,,,,as Jenny says.... fat.

I nearly always trim the corners... It really does help.

It drives me crazy....

Anyway, I hope you got your answer about the SINGLE FOLD binding! I find that very hard to use, so I would always prefer to use the double fold tape, or even the extra wide double fold stuff. It just adds more stability to your edges, and lays neater when you sew the second edge down.

The iPad is both a blessing and a curse sometimes.... Mine is mire or less permanently attached to me.... My whole life is on it....

It has been especially important since I have had to stay home a lot, because of my DH's illness.... It's my lifeline. And, I'm do glad I found you guys,,,.

Well, that is what I wanted to do, but didn't have enough fabric. I'm going to work on a couple of little quilts today, so I hope to have a large enough backing to bring the binding forward....

As I told Iris Girl, this us what in thought I might do, but didn't have enough extra Fabric.... Double gold good flannel is just too thick.

If you catch it before the "edit" time expires you can go to advanced settings and fix the title. I have done that a couple of times.
