    Default Extra Warm Batting

    Hello!
I'm making a quilt for my daughter-in-law who has extreme rheumatoid arthritis. It can be 80 degrees out and she'll have on long sleeves and knee socks trying to keep her joints warm. I usually use warm and natural batting but wondered if there is something you all might know about that is heavier.

    Thanks!

I believe that poly is actually warmer than cotton.... And, there id always wool.... You could probably double up on your W&W or W&N..... Flannel backing helps, too.

I use flannel to back nearly all of my baby quilts, as well as some lap quilts.... They are so warm...

    Hope this helps.

I made a lap throw recently for a senior at a local nursing center. She is also suffering from that form of arth.
The top was flannel, the middle was w & n and the backing was flannel. She is loving it.
I was tempted to double line it but was afraid of the weight. The flannels seemed to work fine with the batting and was the easiest thing in the world to hand quilt.

What about fleece for the backing? One quilt I made is too warm and it has fleece backing and warm and natural batting and a cotton pieced top.

I recently bought Katahdin brand winter weight batting. Made in Maine. 100% polyester. Package says excellent for hand quilting and machine quilting, luxurious lofty hand, needles wonderfully. I have not used it yet, that project got stalled. It seems as if it will be nice, and not a bad price. Found it at a LQS. I wanted something warmer, and I like made in the USA.

thank you all for the suggestions. The quilt is flannel (front and back) at her request because her RA is so bad. I'll ck into these and see what I come up with.

I use fleece as batting most often. I like the weight. I used W&N for a quilt that I sold and the gal commented that it was lighter than she expected.

My hubby said the same thing. He remembered his Grandmother's quilt being heavy. So... We were at Joann's waiting at the cutting counter and he started a conversation with a few ladies about batting. One of the ladies said her mother would use old quilts as batting inside of a new quilt. That would make it heavy, thicker and warmer.

I used Warm and Natural in the first quilt I ever made, but my husband said it wasn't think enough, so I used two layers. It was queen-sized, and It worked great. Because of its size, the quilt is too heavy to use as a lap quilt, but I believe a lap sized with 2 layers of W&N would be great.
