what color thread to use for quilting
Hi its the new quilter again from ca. I am working on a pattern called and amish square. My daughter and her fiance are pittsburg steelers fans and so wanted it it gold and black, the steelers colors. What color thread would you quilt with, the backing is black, I'm afraid that black thread on the yellow might look terrible etc. Advise please:icon_wave: Thanks I'm really enjoying learning to quilt.
Re: what color thread to use for quilting
How about a photo of the top? Without a photo I am saying to go with the gold.
Re: what color thread to use for quilting
Pittsburgh fan here and I would go with the go.d as well
Re: what color thread to use for quilting
Black in the bobbin and gold on top!
Re: what color thread to use for quilting
Definitely black in the bobbin and gold on the top.

quilters have to be the kindest most helpful people in the world. Thanks for all your help
Re: what color thread to use for quilting
ok, here comes the monkey wrench. LOL I would use gold in the bobbin and black in the top. then you have black and gold on both sides. ( Really you should use orange and brown for the Cleveland Browns. :icon_heh:)
Re: what color thread to use for quilting
If the back is solid black, ever think of doing some kind of FMQ design on the front with gold in the bobbin and on the back..thus seeing an outline/drawing of whatever in gold thread on the black back? LIke if you are just STID your blocks, then that outline would appear on the back in gold..kind of like the "negative" of FMQ design. Granted if you are meandering FMQ I wouldn't think that would look so great but just SITD the design of the blocks might look pretty cool. Extra design without any additional work!

The last baby quilt I did red embroidery thread on top and pink cotton in the bobbin (the back is pink/white zebra like print) and the top had solid red fabric between hexagons. I also tested it on a sample sandwich using the backing fabric and top fabric to make sure my tension was good.
I used the ladder stitch (looks like a double sided blanket stitch) to quilt the top. I went over every seam since it was for a baby and would probably be washed quite a bit.
If you are confident with your quilting then try like others have suggested with a pretty gold embroidery thread in the bobbin. Do a practice piece first and see which you like.
Re: what color thread to use for quilting
I often use monofilament on the top because it has no color. The quilting looks good without distracting from the colors and blocks in the quilt.

Pattycake...where do you get monofilament? And does it accomodate the bobbin so the bobbin thread doesn't show on top? I'd like to try this!
