Default Do you wash your fabric first?

I love the bright fresh colors of a finished quilt but it always is so stiff. Do you wash your fabric first or do you wash your quilt after you are done or does anyone have any suggestions? Doing quilts for grandchildren and want them to be soft and cozy.

I only pre-wash cotton for clothing. I have never used flannel but would pre-wash that. I like to make my quilt and then wash it when done to get it all soft and I use the color catchers as well. I just like to make sure that it is just fine with no issues and can be washed without any trouble for the recipients. I use Magic Sizing because it is far cheaper than best press so I always want that and any hand lotion that I may have added to the fabric is all washed out as well.

The simple answer is no.... I don't believe it is necessary today.... That doesn't mean I don't check out a deep or bright reference, because I do,,,, Usually. All I have to do is remember the hours I used to put in washing, drying and ironing everything... Not to mention trimming the frayed edges... No thank you..

I love working with fresh, new fabrics... So that's what I do..

I don't wash mine either. I can be lazy and hate having to iron yards of material. I also hate the frayed edges. Plus I like the look of washing the whole quilt as it gives it kind of a wrinkled old look....which is my goal anyway! So far..so good, not had any problems.

I don't wash either but I only use fabric from quilt shops. I can see running into problems with cheaper cottons. I had a 3 yard length of cotton from Jo-ann's and I washed it in preparation for making some pajama pants. Boy, did it shrink!!! About 4 inches!! Had i used that for a backing I think I would have been most displeased!

I don't normally, especially when working with precuts. I did on the project I'm working on now though, since it's a bubble baby quilt and I won' wash it when I'm done. I don't want a baby to play on (taste!) all the chemicals still in the unwashed fabrics. One of the fabrics I used to boost the charm pack number (I used a charm pack but it wasn't enough) REALLY shed a lot of colour - I had to rinse seven times before it stopped! With precuts I only put them in hot water for ten mins and then rinse them, as to not make them unravel. With that shedding fabric I put some washing up liquid in the last rinse and it really helped.

I am a pre washer. Everything goes in the wash excluding pre cuts before I use it. Old habit from making garments. Some things never change.

Yes, I wash fabric. Especially cotton (which for now is the only thing I can imagine quilting with).

    Soft fabric?

You got a lot of your answers on your post a couple days ago.

    I prewash flannel only.

Yes. We wash all our fabric (except pre-cuts) before quilting with it.
Not getting much sewing done lately. #Parenting
