Glad you've found quilting! I don't use starch, I use Magic Sizing when I'm done with the quilt top. I use a bit of steam when I'm pressing my seams as I go. You don't want to open your seams, they need to be ironed toward the darker fabric, again, as you go. This is the method that I was taught but I'm sure there will be others who do it differently. Good luck!

I don't use starch but I think some quilters do. I do use steam.

I have been wuilting for a couple of years. I dont like starch, it seemed to flake and make a mess for me. I use steam and it gets the creases out and works great for me

I don't like starch either. I use best press before cutting any bias pieces....otherwise just steam.

I've never used starch, just my steam iron. And don't press seams open because it allows the quilt batting to work it's way out. Be sure to press towards the darker fabric.

Welcome to the wonderful world of quilting and have fun with it!

I read starch attracts silverfish and you should wash out of quilt when done, that was enough to not even try it for me.
To quilt or not to quilt?.....what a ridiculous question!

I use steam also ...... and I use Mary Ellen's Best Press when necessary. It really works well and doesn't make the fabric stiff....

Red face Re: Just learning and have question

I use a fabric spray called best press..it smells awesome! Its supposed to make your fabric easier to cut and sew....and it has worked well for me!! (yes I am very new) but I really like the stuff! I never heard about the silver fish thing..so glad I never bought starch!! Ew!
My husband lets me have all the fabric I can hide
