Glad you've found quilting! I don't use starch, I use Magic Sizing when I'm done with the quilt top. I use a bit of steam when I'm pressing my seams as I go. You don't want to open your seams, they need to be ironed toward the darker fabric, again, as you go. This is the method that I was taught but I'm sure there will be others who do it differently.
