    Default Half-square triangles

Ok..I am determined to try that tube method Jenny shows on one of her tutorials. I have a block of the month that is the basket. It has quite a few half-square triangles, so I thought now would be a good time to try this method. So: the finished triangle will be 2 1/2". Being math challenged, I figure I need to cut 2 strips that are 3"xWOF. Sew the 2 strips together on both sides, 1/4". Line up the ruler at 45 degree angle on the sewn line and cut. This would give me the 2 !/2" half square.

    Did I get this right???

By the looks of it...I need to make the strips 4 1/4". I think I might try it on scrap material. I'll let you know. Seems a bit large for this method. But what do I know??!!

This is the tut I'm referring to..except using only 2 colors.

And this one is probably more what I should do. It does look like the 4 1/4" strip or square would work. Jenny's got smaller than the 5" she started with.

Where is there a chart for making 1/2 sq. triangles because patterns call for different sizes. Jenny's tutorial is great but she is only using a 5 inch square. When it comes to math I am dumb to dumber.~Terry

    Patchwork-and-Quilting.com "Calculating Half-Square Triangles"

It says to add 7/8" to the required FINISHED SIZE of you half-square unit. For example: If you want a 4" (finished size) half-square triangle unit, you need to cut two squares that measure 4 and 7/8" each.

I am so confused about what is meant by finished size and unfinished size. Sounds silly, I know. But they seem interchangable. In the end I decided to buy the Wonder Cut ruler and my problem has been solved.
