Do you think this would work ?

I have some jelly rolls i like alot i was think of weaving them so to speak and using some fusible stabilizer to make it like a piece of material to make a purse do you think it would hold together long enough to cut and sew it all together? i would be making a liner as well with regular material.

Stabilizer would definitely be the easiest. I would use a stabilizer that comes in black or white so there's no chance you would see it anywhere through the weave. I'd use the black behind dark fabrics or if you're using lights I'd use the white.

If for some reason you don't use the stabilizer, another option would be to use a solid fabric of similar color behind the weave. Tape the solid around its edges to your table so it doesn't shift. Do the weaving over the solid so it's already in place when completed. Use a disappearing fabric marker to draw the pattern onto the woven fabric including a seam allowance. Lift up one side at a time and spray baste the woven to the solid. Sew on the drawn line. Cut out your pieces.

The iron on stabilizer would be faster but the second would be simple to do as well. It might take a few minutes longer in your preparation.

My only concern would be the raw edges. I like to throw my bags in the washer occasionally. If your are wanting a raggy edge that would be fine then. But of course you still have to sew to the lining, so . . . good luck, can't wait to see the finished project

I'm kinda like Blondie in worrying about ragged edges. Are you planning to stitch anywhere after you've woven the pieces together? That should help. I would be concerned about catching the loose edges on something if you didn't quilt it . . .

Here is a recipe from Moda Bake Shop that uses a woven Jelly Roll for a rug. What they do can easily be adapted to making bags and there are no raw edges, I hope this helps.

I had saved this link as I liked the idea, although I was still a little concerned about the edges even though they zigzag them. I was thinking it would be lovely for table runner and place mats, with or without the non slip back, of course you wouldn't add that bit if you are using for bags. I considered pressing that sewn edge to the centre like you do for bias strips that are used in applique and the like, rather than just pressing the strip flat with the raw edge on the edge (hope that makes sense). That way they would end up inside the woven piece and absolutely no problem with fraying.
