    Default How to straighten fabric?

What methods do you use to straighten fabric to make sure you cut your pieces on-grain. I have several questions here...

    1. Some quilt stores rip fabric, which (I guess) they do to make sure it is "cut" on grain, but then the edges don't always match up. How do you straighten this?

    2. How do you straighten fabric which is cut, not ripped?

    3. How do you straighten pieces of fabric which are several yards?

    4. How do you straighten fat quarters?

I have a little method that serves me well.

    1. I fold my fabric in half, making my best guess for straight of grain. Do not crease the fold nor iron it.

    2. Place something long and thin, like an unsharpened pencil, "inside" the folded fabric.

    3. Hold the fabric up in the air, holding the selvages.

    4. Unlees you're on the straight of grain, there will be "waves" in your fabric. Keep sliding those selvages until all the "waves" disappear.

    5. Carefully lay your fabric on your cutting table, remove the pencil, finger press your fold and cut perpendicular to it.

This should work with any of your questions. With many yards, I straighten one end and start pinning the selvages together, checking with the pencil toward the end.

    Wishing you well!

I must admit, I've never worried about being on the straight of grain before. Maybe I need to start. I'll watch this thread for suggestions.

I never worried about it because I was making kids clothes. Now all of a sudden I have to worry when making quilts. Make a few dozen HST's and have to square them up, you won't worry anymore. lol

I have ripped. I'm not against it. Toni has great suggestions. There was a Leah Day tutorial about this just recently too.

I straighten much like Toni but without the pencil. Saw it on You Tube Some where. I do iron first if it is very wrinkled. So I guess that is called the slide method.

So is there an advantage to having fabric ripped instead of cut at the store? Does that help you line up the grain?

    Thanks for your help!

I have only had that happen once at one of my stores. I think it would scare people to see that happen to the fabric they are buying.lol But at home if I rip I cut off the wave that it causes after. Its' only about 1/4''.

One of my LQS insists on ripping extra wide backing. There isn't anyway to straighten this unless an army helps you. I refuse to buy that kind of fabric from them once I tried and failed to get it straight enough to go on the longarm frame. I lost almost 12" of fabric by having to resort to cutting it to get the fabric squared up.

I don't know if it's the same for sewing and for quilting, but my tailoring teacher in high school used to have us pair up with a buddy and take opposite corners of the piece of fabric and give it a tug to straighten the grain, before we could even think about laying out a pattern.
