Default How do you make your perfect HSTs?

Hi, my name is Tana and I'm new here and LOVE quilting. I'm having some trouble making perfect HSTs. Do some of you cut your square a little larger than the pattern says and then square them up? I would love to hear about any methods you use. If there is a tutorial out there, please send a link. Thanks so much!

Aloha Tana! They sure aren't as easy as they look are they? I have a square up ruler which really helps. The charm parks are hard for me. I'm going to do an hour glass cut from yardage and do like you mentioned and just cut it down. The stress to make them right out of the park is too hard. lol

I would occasionally have problems with these. This year, the BOM I am doing uses Marti Michell templates. The corners on all of them are cut off and they fit/next together perfectly. As much as I hate using these templates, that is the one nice thing I can say about them.

I use the method of sewing my 2 squares together, 1/4" on each side of the middle, then cutting in half and ending up with 2 half square triangles. I have tried Jenny's method of sewing around the outside of the square, but I seem to have a harder time keeping all the edges straight with that method, I guess because of the bias edges.

That's what threw me off too, going all around the square. I'm ready to start another one and doing what Susan said.

The quilt show I went to in February had a tiger tape demonstration - you put two squares together, put the tape on the diagonal, and sew on the edges of the tape, then cut down the center. If you dont want to draw a line, that is. But drawing a line is much cheaper.

I've used both methods and starching does help to stabilize the bias. Squaring up is essential!

I forgot, using an easy angle 2 (a clear sheet you put on your machine) is also a big help!!

I messed up 10 just yesterday. I am going to give it a try again today. I have a Quilters World 1/2 square triangle ruler for drawing the line and those ones were better but I need more practice.

Fons And Porter has a set of rulers designed to help you draw the line if you like to use that method. I have some Marti Michell templates, they sure do make what you are making quite a success. How do you make your perfect HSTs?-image.jpg
