Practicing FMQ and this is what happened
Ok I had to stop and change out the bobbin and everthying was going good up till that point and now I am getting this mess. So what I'm I doing wrong? I have not changed the tension or the stitch width, but cant figure it out. Might be just the machine?
Re: Practicing FMQ and this is what happened
Many times you get the bird's nest if you have forgotten to put your presser foot down after changing the bobbin. I know from experience :(
Re: Practicing FMQ and this is what happened
When this happens for me, i just rethread the bobbin and that usually do the trick.
Re: Practicing FMQ and this is what happened
That or when you changed it sometimes fuzz gets loose. Try brushing it out then retread top and bobbin again!!
Re: Practicing FMQ and this is what happened
I'd guess that the bobbin was in wrong. I think these "messes" have happened to all of us at least once, so don't give up!
Re: Practicing FMQ and this is what happened
JLynn I was having the same problem last night when trying to FMQ. I cleaned out my bobbin area and wound a new bobbin with thread and still had the tangled thread nests on the back even though things had worked fine earlier. After rethreading the upper thread several times with different thread and testing my stitching I finally changed my needle out for a new needle and everything worked fine again. I had been using that needle for most of the project and I think it may have developed a burr that was catching on the thread when doing the FMQ. It's worth trying. In general when my stitching messes up I try to methodically check all the possible problem areas.
- Rethread the machine
- Wind a new bobbin
- Check your tensions
- Clean out any dust balls or lint
- Change out the needle
- Shut off the machine and turn on again to reset the computer
- Go to bed and hope it cures itself by morning! ;)

New machines are always fun and if you need a reason to buy one then this is as good as any! BUT if you prefer to avoid the expense of a new machine, when all else fails take the old machine in for professional repair. It might still be something simple to fix and the repair bill should be less than a new purchase. Better yet repair this one AND buy a new one...you always need a backup machine! :D :icon_razz: :icon_wave:

Wish I could do that! hehe
Re: Practicing FMQ and this is what happened
When that happens to me I just re-thread and re-check the bobbin..... I find that I sometimes just throw the bobbin in and don't stop to think of counter clock wise...... and swear that they need to come up with a machine that has as much thread on the bobbin as the spool holds......lol ( I know thats impossible) but it makes me giggle......
Re: Practicing FMQ and this is what happened
Also, don't forget to BRING UP YOUR BOBBIN THREAD
Re: Practicing FMQ and this is what happened
REALLY good advise! Thanks!
Re: Practicing FMQ and this is what happened
Ok I finally figured this out my tension on the bobbin holder had loosened up. So for now no new machine and yea I don't have to take it in for repairs.
Re: Practicing FMQ and this is what happened
I am learning FMQ too..and am happy to say I am getting pretty good at it. But...practice practice practice!!! I have found that anytime the "bird nesting" happens on the back...it aggrivates me so... I am sewing along and the top looks great, the sound of the machine is fine, seems to be just perfect. Then I stop and turn it over and everywhere I sewed is bird nested! So much thread wasted! But after MANY times of this happening and trying so many things.. it has ended up that it is ALWAYS (At least in my experience) that the top thread needs re=threaded. I can't figure it out.. I thread it the same way every time, same thread etc. But for some reason I guess it just doesn't meet up with the machine the way it is supposed to...inside the area where the needle goes up and down. But I just pull it out (even then, the thread seems very smooth and not stressed) but I re thread it, and it sometimes takes 2-3 times of re-thread, but it always fixes the problem. I now keep some pieces of fabric/batting/fabric sandwiches ready to go, and anytime I start FMQ... I always run it through this practice piece...sometimes it works fine the first time, other times, bird nesting...but at least I can fix it right then, without wasting a ton of thread and tampering with the fabric of the quilt to get it all out!
Re: Practicing FMQ and this is what happened
If the mess is on the top, then the culprit is generally the bobbin. It may not be seated correctly. Did you hear (or feel) it snap into place? Did you put the bobbin in the shuttle facing the correct way? If it's a drop-in bobbin, is it wound evenly?
Hope you figure it out soon.
Re: Practicing FMQ and this is what happened
I agree with all of the above suggestions. I do not get as much of this happening latelyl. One thing it took me a very long time to learn with my machine was to get the bobbin wound tight as I could. I find if I lightley put the thread between my fingers when the bobbin is winding up on its way to the bobbin from the spool of thread. It took me many messes to figure this one and listening to the dealer who showed me. What a difference.
Re: Practicing FMQ and this is what happened
I've had that happen when I changed the bobbin and forgot to pull the bobbin thread through to the front before starting again. Funny it could be so many things causing the same thing. Don't stop. Love the steps above :)
Re: Practicing FMQ and this is what happened
I started having that issue with regular sewing but it was sporadic. Found out I wasn't using enough tension when I threaded my machine sometimes so it wasn't going through the inner workings properly. Also discovered I was putting my bobbin thread in upside down! doh! SOOO many lessons learned! Glad you got yours figured out! Sorry about not getting the new machine though...that would have been fun!
