Cats Claw : does anyone use one besides me
Was just wondering if anyone else used this cats claw besides me. I seen it many years ago but would not pay the price so hubby made me a couple (in case I lose or misplace one) out of a metal thumb pick and a darning needle. I first used it when I was doing heirloom sewing to keep the gathers even as they went under the foot, but now use it to keep the seams going the right way as they go under the foot.

Re: Cats Claw : does anyone use one besides me
Never seen one before. I have seen people that used porcupine quills for the same purpose.
Re: Cats Claw : does anyone use one besides me
I use a medium-sized bamboo skewer. That is a pretty cool contraption though! Even cooler that your hubby made you some!
Re: Cats Claw : does anyone use one besides me
I used to but it bothers my hands now.
Re: Cats Claw : does anyone use one besides me
I have never seen this before. This afternoon, I was having to raise my presser foot over and over to get the seam to go under it. My machine has a knee lifter, but I never use it, so it is up and down manually.

You must be the only quilting member I know who raises porcupines. You need to share, you know.
Where in the world do porcupines live? I haven't seen but one in my lifetime . . . isn't that because they have difficulty mating?

We have them out here someplace. My cat came home with quills in his head once.
Re: Cats Claw : does anyone use one besides me
I have never seen one of those before. It looks pretty handy! I've been using my seam ripper to guide my seams under the foot.
Re: Cats Claw : does anyone use one besides me
Iris you lucky woman! What a creative tool your husband made - never saw anything like this. I also use my seam ripper to stuff the seams in. This looks like it would be a great spare "hand" to have.
Re: Cats Claw : does anyone use one besides me
That is pretty cool, specially the handmade part of it.
Those porcupines are funny creatures, I saw one in Alaska munching on a small tree about ten feet away from me, I took a picture of him and he was so well camouflaged that you can't see him in the picture. I know he was there but it is like he disappeared.
Re: Cats Claw : does anyone use one besides me
How ingenious! I use my purple thang.
Re: Cats Claw : does anyone use one besides me
I don't use a cat's claw, but I have a Purple Thang and use it the same way as your claw.
Re: Cats Claw : does anyone use one besides me
Claire and Karen - I am off to google porcupines. I think the only one I ever saw was in Texas or New Mexico. Interesting creatures - but I still want a cat's claw. Think it is wonderful to fit on the finger.
Re: Cats Claw : does anyone use one besides me
That contraption is also called a "trolley needle" I've used one in heirloom sewing. There was a lady at a quilt expo doing a form of turn needle applique with it. Rather interesting.

Re: Cats Claw : does anyone use one besides me
heres a picture of my thingy i use for feeding seams etc under the presser foot...cant remember the real name of it and ive thrown out the packaging, but got it at my local sewing shop...having been a dressmaker for years i was used to using a tailors awl, but the two prongs on this works way better...even the handle is anodised metal...it wasnt expensive
cheers, pami
Re: Cats Claw : does anyone use one besides me
I never saw a tool like this, but it is a good idea, thanks for posting it
Re: Cats Claw : does anyone use one besides me
Interesting tool! I've never seen this one before! I'd be afraid I'd forget it was on there and stab myself. Go to scratch my eye or something! Looks dangerous!
Re: Cats Claw : does anyone use one besides me
I'm with Rebecca - the possibility of poking my eye is too great. I'd really have to quit the wine for sure and that's not going to happen so I'll stick with the purple thang. Great of DH to make them for you though. Kudos to the man!
Re: Cats Claw : does anyone use one besides me
Definitiely dangerous - I'd poke my eye out with it that's for sure
Re: Cats Claw : does anyone use one besides me
I use an orange stick - the wooden cuticle thingee. It's beveled on 1 end and pointy on the other end. I've seen the cat's claw when I used to do more counted cross stitch. It is used to help lay the embroidery floss flat/untwisted on the fabric.

1st time I've seen one, I just use the tip of my seam ripper--works just as well.
Re: Cats Claw : does anyone use one besides me
I use a cuticle stick but I like the idea of having something attached to your finger. Cool idea.
