Sew I'm thinking (usually a bad thing haha), but why wouldn't a zipper foot work great sewing a binding to a quilt?
I have the front sewn, then always get nervous about doing the SID on the front -- cuz some times it doesn't catch the back -- So just wondering if this would work better?
Anyone try it?
Interesting idea!!! I have never sewn a binding on front and back by machine, only the front then hand stitch the back. I too would be nervous about not catching the back in. I've watched a nd read about a few ways of stitching it to the back then finishing on the front by machine but never yet tried it.
I've got a table runner ready to bind, if I get a chance tomorrow I'll dig out my zipper foot and see how it works. I'd still prefer to work from the front, and have a weeny bit more binding width on the back, but you may be onto something.
I've got a binding foot for my Janome but it only does skinny stuff on thin layers. The other foot gizmo I've seen, no thanks lol. Let's come up with something quick and easy!!!

*Handshake* deals on Pami :-) I avoid hand sewing even if my stitches show, so I'm definately willing to give this a go -- I'm used to sewing clothing and pillows with cording always with a zipper foot -- Googled but no info on using it for machine quilting... But, if we don't try, we won't know and maybe we'll figure out a very cool, quick and easy way?
I think you will not not have as much control of your fabric sewing with a zIpper foot. Just my opinion.
I'm working on making some videos to put on You Tube about binding. Just have to get them uploaded somehow! It will show how you can do them all by machine, look great on front, maybe not what look you want on back, but it works for me, since I don't handbind.
I sew the binding on the back, then foid it over to the front and use a zigzag stitch. I don't pin, just do a few inches at at time and line the folded edge of the binding to the stitch that holds it all together and zigzag ON the binding...thread is same color as binding so it matches and following that stitch make me sew on the binding on both sides. I use an all-purpose foot..that allows zigzag. But the zipper foot..I'll give it a try and see how it works. Always looking for better and easier ways to do complicated things!

I gave it about 8" with the zipper foot, not too bad using the Pfaff with the IDT, but it was not a secure feeling as with the walking foot - maybe for a smaller project, Table Runners, Mug Rugs. Mostly I missed the ditch from "user" error (sleep then try new ideas).

That's what I thought would happen. A zipper foot is designed to butt up against something to stay straight. You have nothing to butt against when using a zipper foot, you are on top of things, not next to things.Quote:

I ripped out the 8" trial and will just attempt the walking foot with another great tip to cut the backing down to 1/4" or less so it will catch!
I had a horrible time trying sitd on my little mug rug. I was just using a regular foot. I watched a Nancy's notions video and she used a small zig- zag like Cheri said. That's good enough for me. STID is way harder that it sounds! My quilt class is next week and I have to bring that foot for the machine I never use fo regular sewing, Poor thing. So I hope to learn some tips!
So right Lorie!! I need to take some classes now that Jenny's Tutorials have given me a great jumping off point. That would be fun and share those tips too

I'm scared to try - I've had good results sewing mine on the front and hemming by hand (which I love doing) so haven't plucked up the courage to try another way.
I sew the binding to the back and fold over to the top. If it's really close, I'll use some pins or clips to the hold the binding in place. Then, I use my edge foot (Bernina #10 or #5). The edge of the foot rests along the edge of the binding and I move my needle over enough to catch the binding. Works every time and I get a nice neat machine binding. You may be able to find an overcast or edge foot for your machine.
When you are finished with the videos, if you want, send them to me like you did before and I will post them for you. It should be easier this time, once I remember how to do it. LOLQuote:
