Re: Jellystone Park quilt
The one's I've seen were made with a Jelly Roll, but I guess you could cut up a layer cake and make it. Which one are you using? I love the layer cakes best. LOL.
Re: Jellystone Park quilt
It's called Sakura Park. It is just beautiful. Pink is my favorite color.

I also just saw a quilt of just charm squares. I could cut up the cake into 4 charm squares and that might be pretty too.

My question is, could you use a layer cake to make it? Cut the 10" square into 4 strips of 2.5" and then sew 4 different ones together and cut it diagonally? Is it that simple?
I have a layer cake that I just love. I've already made 2 Double Slice quilt tops so would like to try something else. I thought this might be a good one and would face my fear of triangles too.
No, it won't work with a layer cake. The diagonal triangle won't be the same as the ones you get from cutting up a strip set.

That should work as long as you end up with 8 1/2 inch squares once your strips are sewn together. You need 40 blocks and you should be able to get a block from each square in the layer cake. Give it a try. I think it would work.

She would be cutting strips from the layer cake. They just wouldn't be as long. Maybe I'm not thinking straight but I think it would work.
Re: Jellystone Park quilt
I think Karen is right...it won't work...unless I trim the square down once all the strips are sewn together as one side would still measure 10", the other would be 9"... Did I do that right? I am not good at the math part.
Re: Jellystone Park quilt
You would cut your layer cake into 2 1/2 inch strips. You should get 4 of them. You would sew the 4 strips together (just like you would do if it was a full length jelly roll strip). Your block would end up being 8 1/2 x 10. Then you would trim each set of 4 strips down to an 8 1/2 inch square (just like you do with the jelly roll). I guess I'm confused but I don't see the difference.

Okay, I was thinking the strips were cut like the above. They aren't. I do think you can use the layer cake as long as one side is trimmed down. I had to go and look up the pattern to make sure.
Re: Jellystone Park quilt
I think it would work and the Jellystone would look beautiful in that fabric. I am not a huge pink fan but the way they put that collection together is wonderful.
Re: Jellystone Park quilt
So as long as I trim down the 10" side to make it a square, it should work. Then I just cut the square on the diagonal right?
I can't find a free pattern online anywhere...I want to be sure before I start cutting up fabric and wasting it!

Yes, trim your 10" side down to 8 1/2" and then cut diagonally. It's the same as 4 strips of 2 1/2" fabric sewn together. (Which unfinished is 10").

Okay I may jumping in the dark here but this pattern looks like this to me. You have to watch the whole thing to get what I'm thinking. She is making three blocks at a time so it is the last one

Re: Jellystone Park quilt
you should try it out with some scraps before using your good fabric on it. I think whether or not it works depends on how you are cutting it.
I have 2 quilts made with strip sets and cut into triangles like you diagrammed. After piecing the strips, cutting into triangles and sewing the blocks together, I cut them down to 8-1/2" square. The diagonal edge of the widest triangle cut from the strip set is just a tad over 11" finished, so it would have had to been 11-1/2" unfinished to get my 8" finished square. If you want to use your layer cake, you should probably plan on your finished blocks being a bit smaller, maybe 6" or 7" finished or so.
Re: Jellystone Park quilt
This collection looks like last years Dogwood Trails which I adored and made a beautiful quilt using,!

If you can find my original post I gave detailed instructions on how to make this quilt.
