So as long as I trim down the 10" side to make it a square, it should work. Then I just cut the square on the diagonal right?
I can't find a free pattern online anywhere...I want to be sure before I start cutting up fabric and wasting it!

Okay I may jumping in the dark here but this pattern looks like this to me. You have to watch the whole thing to get what I'm thinking. She is making three blocks at a time so it is the last one

you should try it out with some scraps before using your good fabric on it. I think whether or not it works depends on how you are cutting it.
I have 2 quilts made with strip sets and cut into triangles like you diagrammed. After piecing the strips, cutting into triangles and sewing the blocks together, I cut them down to 8-1/2" square. The diagonal edge of the widest triangle cut from the strip set is just a tad over 11" finished, so it would have had to been 11-1/2" unfinished to get my 8" finished square. If you want to use your layer cake, you should probably plan on your finished blocks being a bit smaller, maybe 6" or 7" finished or so.
This collection looks like last years Dogwood Trails which I adored and made a beautiful quilt using,!
