    Default mitered corners

I am new to the quilting world and so far have finished 4 projects. however with each one I am having trouble with the mitered corners once I turn the binding to hand sew to the back. I have watched Jennys tutorial over and over and I think I am sewing it right its just when I turn and hand sew they don't look as nice as I think they should. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated..

I love this tut but I may have posted them backwards. One is for a single and the other is for a piping effect.

Honestly, chica, it takes practice, practice, practice. I struggled with this when I first started, and forced myself to face it head-on. I must have made 10 sets of potholders, just trying to master the binding technique. I used Jenny's Craftsy 'Quilting Quickly' tutorial, which I would highly recommend. Now maybe I'm not ready to enter a quilt in a county fair, but I can hold my own...

I'm a visual/audio learner and I really got it with Eleanor Burns video on YouTube. It's a simple method but she's detailed (as an OCDer very helpful lol) and doesn't zoooooom through everything) - nice closeups, so you can see what the heck she's doing. My main complaint in many videos when you're trying to learn something new, too quick and no closeups.

Below is the link to the video. Then it's takes some practice, however with her method I found it much easier to get consistent results on all four corners of my mugrugs, portfolios, journals, wallarts, quilts.

    Hope it helps. Huggers, Ruby

Oh how I wish that video was by ANYONE but Eleanor Burns! She's a smart lady, really knows her stuff, but her voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me lol I put my FIRST EVER binding on yesterday by machine (I put a binding on MIL's table runner and then my own Mom's table runner, but they don't really count) and I got the first side done perfectly, then flipping it over took a whole lot of fudging to get those miters to show up on the front (or back, however you look at it). I managed to finish it, but it did take a few four letter words lol I think I know what caused a lot of my problem though, I was using my walking foot and that bugger is HUGE! It was the first time I tried that foot because I was sewing together two layers of flannel so I wanted to have as much help as I could get, but I really think my binding would have been nicer with a 1/4" foot, so that will be my next experiment

Did you know that you can buy an open toe walking foot and open toe FM foot for some sewing machines? Check the website for your machine. I then called my dealer and he had them in stock for my 12+ year Janome.

Another suggestion is to clip off the corners of your quilt, so there isn't as much bulk. The key is having that 45* angle when you flip it up, and it is aligned straight with the edge when you fold it back down.
