    Cool Best Quilt Batting?

I'm making a quilt for my son for his birthday and I need to know the best quilt batting to purchase. It needs to be able to hold up to LOTS of washing (he's going to be 3) and I want it to last for a very long time. Thanks in advance for your input; this forum is invaluable to a newbie quilter like myself!

To begin with welcome from Missouri. I am sure most peeps on here will tell you warm and white or warm and natural, but I am more a fan of 80/20. It holds up great, and has just a little bit more loft than 100% cotton.

I'm a big fan of the Warm Company all-cotton battings (Warm & White or Warm & Natural). But there is a fabulous chart online that details how much shrinkage, beaurding, etc. occurs with just about every batting on the market. You can download it here:
    http://www.villagequiltworks.com/ima...ttingChart.pdf

I don't know how long this will be available, as the chart appears as part of a quilt shop's web site, and the quilt shop has gone out of business. So download it now and save it!

    Best of luck to you.

Something to think about -- Quilter's Dream makes a non-flammable batting that is good for young one's quilts. Just to be on the safe side! It still has a nice drape to it and is snugly, just safer.

And Quilter's Dream is such a delicious batting to work with. It is just so pleasant to the touch. I did find that it kind of sheds onto my quilt, but that can be washed off. Non-flammable is really important for a bambino!

Just as a per-caution to the non flammable, if it isn't a natural non flammable(wool) it is a pretty toxic chemical. I just saw a clip on the news that dealt with the non flammable items and they were talking about how sometimes it actually makes things more flammable. You may think that is not possible but when my husband and I owned/operated a home for the elderly and we were required to treat our curtains with this stuff, my husband tested it and it flamed faster and hotter than just the plain fabric.

I would go with the warm and natural. I have used it in baby quilts and washed them multiple times with very good results. I gave a quilt away this last winter that I had made for my youngest when he was a little bit and it was just like new. Trust me, we had washed it more times than you could count.LOL
    Be blessed,
    Sandy

God has a plan and it is a good plan.

I have used warm and natural and found it too heavy. I use Quilter's Dream now. They make 3 weights in cotton and 3 in polyester. I've used the middle weight in the cotton. I'm using the lightest weight poly in my quilt I'm quilting now and I like it.

The warm and natural also has a "Warm Blend" which is cotton/poly blended but you can still use the quilting distance of the Warm and Natural. It quilts and feels great (imo). I have my first quilt done in W&N and it is washed to death. The binding is getting threadbare but the batting is still intact.
