Comic Boards

Does anyone use the comic boards for organizing their fabric? I think it may work well for me gonna try it I think. This way instead of digging thru a box for a fabric It will be all organized by color, Also what method do you use to hold it on the boards? don't want to put them in plastic bags as then it can't breathe and will get costly...just thinking being able to see fabrics at a glance instead of digging through so many boxes will save time and energy ...more time and energy for sewing then.

I use comic book boards. I secure the fabric with the larger paper clips that are covered with plastic. I bought a big box of paper clips from Staples with lots of colors. Some folks use pins but I don't because I tend to drop them and I worry about my cats and my bare toes finding them later.

I like the comic boards. I can see my fabric instead of digging thru piles of fabric. Seemed everything I needed was always on the bottom of the pile. So much organized this way.

I have 3 different boards that I have used and will take pics later today of each and give a bit of my thoughts on each later on today. Gotta move my booty to get to the kiddo to school and me to work (part time volunteer, so it wont be too long)! ~to include a comic board.

I use the comic book boards and love them. Once the fabric is wrapped up on a board, I just secure it with a couple of straight pins. Works great.

I have read so many good reviews on Amazon about these -- Good price for 100 boards too. They are acid free so no worries about wrapping your fabric either.



Looking forward to seeing pictures of the fabric on them.

Never seen them in Australia and I don't have enough fabric for them anyway - most of my unused stuff is precuts or fat 1/4s or WOF 12" strips. I only have a couple of fabrics longer than a yard in my box (ear-marked for backing) .................. so far

Okay...gotta ask a newbie question....what in the heck are comic boards?

comic book backing boards - collectors use them to keep comic books from getting bent. Quilters use them to store fabric

They are small poster boards that comic collectors put the comics in with a plastic bag for protection.

Picture worth a thousand words.... and the bookcases are from Ikea.... it's saved my life...i use "masking tape" to secure the end.. but it's not mecessary... ibought 3 pkg. and have used 2-Attachment 39740Attachment 39741Attachment 397421/2

Oh my ....green with envy

I have them and it does make it easier to see what I have. When I first did this about 18 months ago I was amazed at what I found and just how much fabric I had. I have the wire drawers with wood on top that my husband cut to fit and the fabric lines very nicely in them.

I'm on my third pack (bought four) I got three yards on one. But if I did it over I would put two cards for that much. It works okay with one though. Under a 1/2 yard I just folded and stacked. It's fun seeing all the polka dots in one place and the sripes in another. It feels so great to be organized!

I had no idea these even existed!!! I'm so excited! I actually thought you all cut cardboard for all the fabric organization I see on posts. DUH!!! I am sooooooo buying these!

OK - You all have convinced me, I need to get - so.... which size??? and then how to fold fabric. Sorry if these sound like dumb questions, but Tessa, your pics convinced me!!!!! Do you all know if MSQC sells these??? or just a local comic store???

has anyone checked out -- chipboard -- from uline.com . . . . that is where I buy my from - but I use it for other things as well

These are the ones I get and a lot of other people use as well. They are acid free, which is good for storing fabrics. Your local comic book/trading card store probably has them as well.

Oh these look workable. I ordered one package of 100 to start from Amazon. When I get started, I'll post progress.

Thanks for that definition - what is the minimum size piece of fabric for storage? - most of my stash (other than precuts) are a yard or less - some only 1/2 yard WOF

Also, our house gets very dusty due to frequent strong winds (called gully breezes here) and very sandy soil. Normally I would place them in bags - but the high humidity encourages mildew

I usually put 1 yard or more on a board. The smaller pieces I just fold like fat quarters.

We have the sand here, but no humidity. Right now mine are stored in clear plastic bins. Once I get shelving I'll loosely cover with plastic.

I just cut up old cardboard boxes to the size that fits into my storage drawers - 11.5" x 5.5" and wrap WOF fabric around that. I don't have an enormous stash and it seems to work well for WOF fabric. I got some plastic drawers from Bunnings for the fat 1/4s and if you fold them to fit it all works quite well. We got the storage drawers from IKEA a while ago but unfortunately they don't have them now.

I have almost all of my stash on comic book boards and love how well things are organized and so accessible. I bought my boards on Amazon. Barb

All you wonderful people convinced me this is the way to go so I just ordered one pack of 100 will see how that goes but I am betting I will need more then that thank you all

I looked again, and I see some wide pieces that may have yardage on some of her boards.. So maybe 2 ish yards per board?

I'm with Karen, we get a ton of sand and dust and my fabric sits in bookcases so I toss plastic only over the tops (cotton needs to breathe). Low humidity but if you have high -- what about moth balls (yeah I know they Smell!), but they sure can keep moisture from molding cotton

Luckily the high humidity days don't happen too often but the weather is 'changeable'

This week for instance its been 26, 28, 34, 36, 37 (C) with humidity rising and lightning storms (no rain) 2 more days like this then it drops to 24 on Tuesday.

My fabric is in open topped boxes on an IKEA unit

I have been using the comic boards for about a year now. Just love how they help me keep organized! I use 2 boards together when I have 3 yards or more of fabric on a bolt. If you check out the middle shelf of my storage cabinet I have several bolts with 3-6 yards of fabric. You really can store quite a bit of yardage using this method. :icon_bigsmile:
