    Default Question about tube pillowcase

The last tube pillowcase I just made is not quite right and I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

The case itself is fine, but when I sewed the second French seam and turned it right side out, there was fabric sticking out from the middle of the seam . Obviously I'm not lining something up right and I can't figure out what it is. I was very careful when lining up the 5 layers, pinning all along the way.

Anyone have a clue? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

    Ooh, I've done that!
When you sew your first seam, sew in a quarter of an inch. When you turn it and sew your 2nd seam, sew in at least 1/2 inch. I am pretty sure that's the problem. I sewed about 6 pillowcases wrong before I caught it! I'm pretty sure this is what you are doing - not sewing in far enough to totally enclose that raw edge.
I hope this helps cause it sounds like that is the problem.

I've not made pillow cases using the tube method ( at least I don't think I have!) but I always do french seams on them. I do the same as above : sew first seam 1/4" then turn and do second seam at about 1/2". I also pink all the edges prior to turning and making that second seam. I do this to make sure I have trimmed any wayward threads. I've not had any issues since I started doing my french seams this way.

Yes, wht Trish said is true, but you can trim the seam after you sew it the first time real close to the stitching, then iron the seam carefully before yousew the second seam.

I agree with Jean....this happened to me and that was the problem...it was the fabric not totally enclosed in the second seam...I now trim it down a little and use 1/2 in on my second seam....problem solved!

Aha! I knew you all had the answer! At first I kept thinking that it had to do with the way I sewed the very first seam, but I pinned it very generously as well as carefully.

Problem solved, thanks to all of you!! Love all the additional tips and tricks, too.

    Grateful Renate
