Tumbling blocks? With OUT PP'ing. Is it even possible.
A couple wks ago, I posted a picture of a quilt that I fell in love with. With your help we determined that it was in fact a tumbling block.
BUT everything I can find as far as tutorials PP's it. They blog in which I got the image specifically stated that her grandmother machine pieced it.
So it can be done?
But how?

Have you checked Kay Woods?
she calls this one "dimensional diamonds". It's all about the color placement:

this one she fussy cuts, but you will see the construction technique.
Edit - it just occurred to me that this could be constructed using the half hexi tool. It would have an extra seam in each block, but would have the same look and no Y seams. Again, laying it out first to get your fabric placement would be the most important step.

Beyond me how you guys see a tumbling block there, other than the three diamonds forming the centre of the hexagons...maybe it's just the tiny pic on my iPhone, but all I see are 60 degree diamonds....

This video might help. She strip pieces tumbling blocks. I am not sure how you would incorporate the stars with it.

It can be done without paper piecing, but it is very time consuming and you have to deal with Y seams. If everything doesn't match up exactly right, you lose the integrity of your design. It just won't look right. I don't think there is any easy, fast way to make a quilt like this.

I actually have a pattern that does this without Y seams or paper piecing. I will look tomorrow when I'm at our office and post the name of it.

If you look closely enough, you can see 9 patches. It's all about the colors..... There's blocks within blocks.

There is a way to make tumbling blocks with straight seams. I did a quilt like that one time, but gave it away. It isn't anything like this beautiful quilt in the picture though. I think it is gorgeous. I see the tumbling blocks!

I sewed a traditional Tumbling Block for my DH (he picked all the fabrics) and did not use PP. They are all sewn with the y-seam. The blocks are relatively small so I marked the stopping and starting points and sewed each seam individually. On larger blocks, I would use Kay Wood's method,
