I just found this, the first SBS I made for my granddaughter Alice in 2000 when I was a very new quilter.

I like the darker thread. That's what I'm accustomed to seeing on older applique quilts in my area and I think it makes each part-arm, bonnet, dress, etc.-more distinct. Would a dark gray work?

IDK but those are super cute!
I'm a total fabriholic...please PM me if you are de-stashing!
This is going to be one precious quilt, no matter what you decide to do!
I would go with a black blanket stitch myself!!
Happy Quilting!
OK this is what I decided on.
Black for the shoes and a toning colour for the rest, did all the shoes in one go, changed the thread and did all the cream, have just changed the thread to do the purple, the last colour will be pink. So far its working well, I can only do a couple at a sitting, then have a break to rest my eyes.
Once the applque is finished I have to wait for a week till I go to the quilt show to sort out some sashing fabric. We have very few quilt shops where we live, so I have to rely on shows to buy fabric. I had found some that was suitable on the web but paying $25 to ship 1 1/2 yds of fabric just is not on, so I have to start the hunt again.

I would do black around all. It will accent nicely I think

I dearly love Sunbonnet Sue. I did one for each of my sweet granddaughters for Christmas one year. On mine I did the shoes in black and then matched the thread to do the dresses. I think either would look wonderful but that is the way I did mine.
I would match the colours myself. Have you tired The Tabby Cat?
