I have a roll of doctor's exam table paper that I got from a medical supply place for $5. I cut a piece longer than the quilt and measure out the top on it, then I fold the paper several times until I get about the size spacing I want and draw or cut it like cutting paper dolls. Then I trace it onto the quilt. I don't cut until it's quilted.
