Default extra wide flannel for batting layer.

I've always pieced my flannel when used as batting, but hate that bulky seam. Anyway, found some extra wide flannel at fabric.com. anyone have experience with this brand of flannel? It will just be for the batting layer, but don't want it disintegrate. I don't quilt heavily.

I've used that as a backing before and it has held up just fine. It's not the thickest flannel, but it worked for me. I did prewash mine before I used it.

Well if it will hold up fine for backing, I would think it would be fine for batting. Thanks!

I'm not sure how "well" it works. But when I put two pieces of batting materials or flannel I would just butt it up together with the edges right next to each other and then I would sew a zigzag stitch to whole the two pieces together. That way you don't get the "bulk" of the seams. If that makes sense of what I'm trying to say? lol

Makes total sense! I've always joined my batting when it had to be pieced that way, just never even occurred to me to do that with flannel. That's a "duh" moment. The seam should hold up fine as its just the batting and will be reinforced with the quilting.

I'm confused. Being a newbie, I'm not sure I understand the concept of using flannel as batting? Would you mind explaining that for me?

Its just an alternative to traditional batting. Makes for a flatter quilt, not as bulky, but really almost just as warm. Won't have the poofiness or crinkles, but sometimes that's just not needed. I also find it easier to quilt as the bulk isn't so great, but does get heavy. I find them very snuggly.

Yeah flannel is just another alternative, and sometimes used to have a "lighter" weight of blankets for those who want to use it for summer times or at least that is what I've been told.
