Adding a border *after* the quilting
So I was looking at my chevron quilt, after I quilted it and just didn't think it was big enough.
So, I decided to add a border all around it which of course was a pain, because I had already quilted it. I sewed the front and back pieces on the sides, and have added the bottom, and butted my batting up to my edges, but now I am second quessing myself. I need second opinions lol

I haven't added the top peices yet, as i am going to embroider the little girls name on the top in the same grays as I used in the chevron pattern and then entire thing will be bound in gray (I am using the backing to self bind)
what do you think?? Did I mess up my beautiful chevron quilt??? I am having a pity party type of day, so everything seems to be bothering me!!!

Re: Adding a border *after* the quilting
I love the border on there! Just my two cents.

Re: Adding a border *after* the quilting
Pretty quilt. I don't know how to attach it but maybe you can find some quilt as you go instructions for attaching it...I would think the seams would show if you just sewed it together.

Re: Adding a border *after* the quilting
I just love it with the borders !!! It is beautiful and i think you made a great job!

Re: Adding a border *after* the quilting
Once you add the quilting to the border nobody will notice that it was an add-on. It is very lovely.

Re: Adding a border *after* the quilting
I think the border adds character and draws the eye to the beautiful chevron. nice job great choice in colors

Re: Adding a border *after* the quilting
I think it's perfect! Can't even tell that's not what you planned. My chevron has been on my wall for 3months. I'm stalling so when the ufo # comes up I have to tackle it. lol

Re: Adding a border *after* the quilting
Ooooo add a black one too! If you can continue the quilting and finish it out, go for it. It doesn't appear in the pic to be an after add on.

Re: Adding a border *after* the quilting
It's very pretty with the border. I like the addition.

Re: Adding a border *after* the quilting
Go for it, it is very nice.

Re: Adding a border *after* the quilting
Love it! It's wonderful!!!

Re: Adding a border *after* the quilting
I think the pink adds to it a lot, and I think you did it just right. A bit of quilting on the border, and no one will know it was added on.

I added the top piece of the border to the top of the quilt and the backing to the back. (sewed on at the same time, kind of like a joining piece for 2 quilt as you go pieces if that makes sense) The front seam looks like a regular border, but the back does have a seam where its added.

Looks great cant wait to see it finished!

Re: Adding a border *after* the quilting
Okay, thank you ladies- I know now it is just me being super critical of myself. I will get it finished and post some pictures.
Thanks again!! This is exactly why I joined a forum, so I can get feedback from someone who isn't me lol.

Yeah that makes sense. I guess I was thinking putting right sides together and sewing and then the edges of a seam showing. I'm going to have to try a quilt as you go just so I know how to do it.

Re: Adding a border *after* the quilting
Looks fine to me. You can't tell that the border was added as an "afterthought."

Re: Adding a border *after* the quilting
You did a good job! The border sets the chevron off perfectly! Hugs, Jan L.

Re: Adding a border *after* the quilting
Can we see finished pics, please? I am unsure just how you added the top border, but I do love the look of the border on the quilt top!

The backing is gray. I cut 2 backing pieces 7"x 33" (the length on the quilt) and 2 pink pieces 6"x33". I then took a pink piece and turned it right side to the top of the quilt and a backing piece right side to the back of the quilt and sewed both pieces to the edge, lengthwise. I did the same thing on the opposite side. I then measured my width of my quilt and cut my backing 7"x 41 1/2" and my pink 6"x 41 1/2" (the width of the quilt with the side borders added) and sewed the bottom piece of the border the same way. The top border piece is cut and will be embroidered/appliquéd and will be added the same way.
Once I sewed my pieces on, I pressed my backing out flat and added my batting in, using a basting spray, and then pressed my pink border on top of that and pinned and trimmed the batting flush with the pink border piece, leaving a 1 inch piece of backing showing. This will be folded over to the front to create my binding.
Clear as mud????

I love it! Keep on, you've got a winner there!

Re: Adding a border *after* the quilting
Ok....I'm slow *lmao*. Nope would never have guessed that was an added on border.....because I didn't even notice it the first time - I thought you were going to add a border and didn't have it on there yet.
It looks GREAT!!!! Now I need to go find something to do.

P.s. I cheated and did a lazy meandering stitch because I didn't trust myself to echo the chevrons.....eek!

Love the border! Looks terrific! No joking. It looks great!

Re: Adding a border *after* the quilting
Reading the three pages of this post was fun... kind of like turning the pages in a book to see what you decided to do with your pretty chevron quilt. I too love the pink border... it really adds a lot to the original. I would agree with whoever recommended a smaller black border too. Great work... awesome! AND SOOOO much better than my own dilemma. I made a quilt for my bed... had it long arm quilted and then I bound it. ALL BEFORE I decided it was about one row too narrow. Too late now... so I just put the short side up against the wall. No one except MEEEE... knows what a mess I made. I scold myself every time I make the bed

Re: Adding a border *after* the quilting
I've done some quilt as you go methods and yours turned out Beautiful!! No-one will see that back seam after you quilt over it, and Huzzah for figuring out a way to extend it to look like it was Meant to be!
Yes, IF you wanted it bigger you could add a white and (or) a black border next but this really looks like you planned it all along. Great job

Re: Adding a border *after* the quilting
I really like the border. How about binding it with the black?
-
Re: Adding a border *after* the quilting
I would do it. Looks nice with the border. Frames up the prettiness of the chevrons.

Re: Adding a border *after* the quilting
I like it with the border too.

Re: Adding a border *after* the quilting
That has got to be the prettiest pink and it goes so well with the black. Love the border....good call, Mchele.

The back is a grayish black and will be the binding as well.

Re: Adding a border *after* the quilting
Yeah, I really like the border on it, really makes it pop like crazy! :)
You're doing a great job and can't wait to see the finished piece. :)

Re: Adding a border *after* the quilting
Pink and black, my two favourite colours (and my wedding colours!) :D Love it! I never would have guessed that the border was added afterwards (except, well, the top section is missing :icon_giggle: )
