How many Charm packs for a queen size simple block quilt?
Hello everyone I'm new...as you can see.
I would like to know how many Charm packs (42 5" squares) I would need to make a queen size quilt. Or a king size.
Thank you! And I'm sorry if this has been asked before!
Jennifer
Ps. I'm trying to figure this out so I can give my husband my Christmas wish list! LOL!

My math stinks but I will check with other people and see what they say. Or you could go to "Ask the MSQC girls" and ask them. They own the shop. Meanwhile I'll check around.

Re: How many Charm packs for a queen size simple block quilt?
Hello and welcome to the forum!
I just googles 'how many 5" squares to make a queen size quilt and got a few different answers.
One site said that a queen size quilt is 60x80". That seemed a tad small for me. Another said they are 86x88". That might be correct. Then another said 90x108" which is counting in extra to use for tucking in and for covering oversized pillows. I would go with the 90x108".
So to get 90" across you would need 90 divided by 5 is 18 blocks across?
To get 108" you would need 108 divided by 5 is 22 blocks across so
18 x 22 is 396 wow that's alot of blocks, but then again, they are only 5" big.
So if you are using charm packs let's see there are 42 in a pack so 396 divided by 42 is 9 packs to get to 378 blocks so you would need 10 packs with some left over that sounds like alot of charm packs.
Maybe someone would like to double check this to make sure I am right?
Hugs,

Hi Trish, I think you are right because it takes 5 packs for a twin and a king is 2 twins So to be safe 10 packs is good.

Re: How many Charm packs for a queen size simple block quilt?
Standard QUEENsized mattress measures 60" x 80."
Including a 12" drop on the sides and foot brings the queen sized quilt to 84" x 92."
The finished size of your squares will be 4.5".
84" divided by 4.5" rounds up to 19 squares across for the width of the quilt.
92" divided by 4.5" rounds up to 21 squares down for the length of the quilt.
19 squares for the width times 21 squares for the length = 399 squares.
399 squares divided by 42 squares per pack YOU WILL NEED 10 PACKS
Standard KINGsized mattress measures 76" x 80."
Including a 12" drop on the sides and foot brings the king sized quilt to 100" x 92."
100" divided by 4.5" rounds up to 23 squares
92" divided by 4.5" rounds up to 21 squares
23 X 21 = 483 squares divided by 42 squares per pack YOU WILL NEED 12 PACKS
If you have a California King bed you will need more. Just follow my lead on the math to figure out how many more packs you would need.
You can always add borders to make the quilt longer on the sides if 12" isn't enough. Some mattress are taller than others these days.
You might want to double check with someone else to make sure I'm right. Good luck!

You mean you want to use a Layer Cake instead of charms? Each layer cake =4 charms.
