Have I bitten off more than I can chew?
ok..following are pics of a pattern I have chosen. This will be my second quilt. Although I am more of a mono-chromatic quilt type person, this is a very "scrappy" type quilt. I don't think it looks very complex but i'm not sure. have I bitten off more than I can chew?
Here is a pic of the quilt completed and a diagram as posted in the magazine:
Attachment 38505
Attachment 38506
It calls for 28 fat quarters of differing fabrics (I'll post a pic of that later) but my local fabric place only sells in yards (not fat quarters) so I have two fat quarters of each colour basically.
The materials are as follows (I hope they don't post upside down...I took these with my phone):
Attachment 38507Attachment 38508Attachment 38509
Is this too much for a totally self-taught newbie? How do I even start...I mean they weren't specific on the materials...so do I basically cut up what I think will look good together?? I like most of the fabric I bought but some I don't love...I mean it's okay but I needed it for the colour more than the print. I also have a feeling that it's mostly "old" fabric designs. The lady at Lens (the shop) said they were about to "mark down the 2006's"...I couldn't get her to quite explain what that meant.

Re: Have I bit off more than I can chew?
oh...and this will be for a king sized bed so I'm going to do three rows of 2 inch sashing, two cream and one red in between them, and then maybe an extra row of the outside. AND I'm only using cotton...they say to mix and match twills, velvets and plaids but I'm not doing that. Not entirely sure really how to make it bigger...and also not sure I have enough fabric for binding and sashing. sigh.

Re: Have I bit off more than I can chew?
I know you can do it! :)
It reminds me of Phoebe's flower box quilt that Jenny just did a tutorial on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kROzleHY3-0 but without doing the four patch for the rectangles and done much more scrappy.
If you want it less scrappy, you could always do the sashing of each rectangle in the same fabric.
To make it bigger, you can just add more rows and columns as needed of the existing pattern - I find that the easiest way to enlarge a pattern. :)

Re: Have I bit off more than I can chew?
Of course you can do it, one step at a time. reading a new pattern can be daunting, I just bought my first pattern, as apposed to a magazine or book, unfortunately not as concise and it does not have all the pictures that magazines/books do. oh well I am reading it and rereading it, I have even considered making some blocks with some cheaper material just to make sure I get it right. Don't forget there is the forum we can all help.

Re: Have I bitten off more than I can chew?
I think you can do it. The blocks look fairly easy....just take your time and enjoy it. :)

Re: Have I bitten off more than I can chew?
I did one like this. It was my first big quilt. Full bed size. It turned out so neat. And if I can do it, you can do it.
Jenny has a tut that is kinda like it, the one with a jelly roll and a layer cake.. I think.

Re: Have I bitten off more than I can chew?
It is very much like Jenny's latest tutorial.
You know Wendy, and don't take offense, but I think you second guess yourself way too much. Just jump into it and get started and you'll do fine.

Re: Have I bitten off more than I can chew?
Looks easy enough. Don't think even someone who has never quilted could do this. Just go for it. No need to worry so much.

Re: Have I bitten off more than I can chew?
Wendy, I KNOW you can do this!
First back up and look at the pattern. It's a basket weave type of thing. You might want to think twice about sashing between the rows, as that will probably break up the intended pattern.
To make it bigger, I agree that I would just add more rows. Make a test block of each to see exactly how big they will be (remember the 1/4" seam allowance thing) and figure how big you want/need. From there you can make each row is as long as you want it to start with, and you won't have to add more to the ends later to make it the right shape (been there, done that). You can also add more or wider borders to to the outside edges get your finished size.
Here is a link to one that is similar & more mono-chromatic. http://www.keepsakequilting.com/productdetail/6799.htm
Have fun and I am sure you will do just fine!

Re: Have I bitten off more than I can chew?
I am sure you can do it!
When I learned sewing (clothing that was) I went with a pattern, the pattern said: Lay your fabric on the table.........that is what I did.......and I went back to the pattern, pattern said, put your pattern on the fabric...... then that was what I did.......and so I went on, step by step!
I learned cooking the same way!
Read........do.......read......do........ get that in your head and you can make anything you want!!
Good luck making this quilt, and don't forget: ENJOY making this project!!!!
It will be a wonderful quilt, and all made by you!

Re: Have I bitten off more than I can chew?
take your time . Take it one step at a time and all will go well it does not look to be too complicated and its going to be beautiful

Re: Have I bitten off more than I can chew?
It is the same as Phoebe's quilt. Just ask yourself first, "wendy, how are you going to quilt a king sie quilt?". When you have a good answer for that, jump in and go for it. I've seen more than once folks who make King quilts, then moan that they can't quilt them. There's a lot of fabric and work in a king top. I just want you to be able to finish the project without tearing out your hair! See my head? No hair missing because I don't do king size quilts.

I have already decided that I am going to attempt a flower type pattern (very easy) in each block and failing that I will send it to MSQC to have it done there....or find someplace local.

Re: Have I bitten off more than I can chew?
This pattern was the 2nd (I think) quilt I made! The pattern is easy peasy and went together quickly. You'll do great and have something fabulous to show for your hard work!

Re: Have I bitten off more than I can chew?
You are very brave to do a king size quilt as your second quilt! Sure, you can do it! It doesn't look like too hard of a pattern. I think you are also smart to think about sending it out for quilting. I am working on a king size quilt now, and have been for months!

Re: Have I bitten off more than I can chew?
I have no doubt that you can do this and do it well, you are more talented than you give yourself credit for...,you see all the mistakes and not the beauty....you will do fine!

Re: Have I bitten off more than I can chew?
This really is an easy pattern and you can do it. I agree with the poster who commented about the sashing. This is not a pattern that lends itself to sashing in my opinion. Can't you just get more fabric and make the rows longer?

Re: Have I bitten off more than I can chew?
In reading, what I could, of your pattern it said twills, velvets, etc. for the border. That means you will probably need to get your quilt dry cleaned although I did wash and dry a quilt with those fabrics in it. Do you plan on using those fabrics or just cottons? I think this pattern will be very easy for you as a second quilt. My second quilt was my "Storm At Sea" with 4 Mariner Compasses. That was tough for me but I sailed through. Good luck to you and keep us posted as to your progress. Piece and blessings, Vicki

Yah no...I'm only using cottons on this. I'm not keen on the other fabrics. Thanks!

Re: Have I bitten off more than I can chew?
Looks like simple blocks. I know you can do it.

Re: Have I bitten off more than I can chew?
Oh, that looks easy enough, and you can absolutely alter a pattern to your liking. You can do it!! :D
