You can do it with a cut in the slot, but you have to move the ruler over to the dotted 1/4 inch line to do so. For instance, if you want a 2 3/4 inch cut, you cut at the zero to make a straight edge. You move the ruler over to the dotted line and you cut at the 3 inch slot. What you have effectively done is removed 1/4 inch from a 3 inch strip. Not hard, but not as easy as cutting a three inch strip. I just didn't want people to think there was a slot every fourth inch.
