Default Jean, I need your help, too!

I remember you saying that you often use a higher loft batting and SITD for your JRR quilts. What kind do you use? I bought some that is "extra high loft poly" because my friend wants her "poufy", not flat like the warm and natural I usually use. The sample they had in the store didn't really look that different. I am afraid to try it - do you have any of your words of wisdom for me?

    Thanks!

Well, the stuff I use is low loft poly, because I don't want to wrestle with real poofy batting, beccause it is harder to manage to not have tucks in the quilting. Not that I have experience with high loft, I've never used it. I can get the low loft stuff for kids quilts for between $5 and $6 on sale at Hancocks Fabrics, so that is why I use it for the charity quilts. Warm and Natural or white would be more than that. I like the low loft for jelly roll quilts, it gives enough poof and isn't hard to quilt with.

If you are doing SITD for the jelly rolls, I guess it would work OK, I'd just use a walking foot for sure, or if your machine has a built in feed system, that will really help. I never use the spray to sandwich my quilts, I use lots of pins. So I can only tell you what has worked for me. I've used the low loft stuff on the longarm a couple of times, it works fine there also. It is lighter weight but seems just as warm as the warm and natural/white is.

Another good qualiy of poly batting is that it is white. If you are using white in your quilt, it won't darken your whites. I didn't have enough warm and white to do that little quilt for Sally, so I used Hobbs 80/20, which is natural color. It seemed to work out OK, but I'm sure a totally white batting would have worked out better.

Thanks! I think I will try a little piece first. It just doesn't seem like it will be that much thicker to me - which I would expect from "Extra high loft". I only have a small machine and am a little worried about getting it through the machine. I pieced the top in two sections that I will join together. I am considering doing it quilt as you go style and joining the two sections after they are quilted.

    Thanks again!

My quilter told me that when someone request a "high" loft, she uses two layers of low loft. She says it's higher then using the high loft. HTH.

That's interesting, I might try that some day.
