Do you use the same size needle to piece as to quilt? What size needle do you recommend? How often do you change your needle?
Thanks

I use Schmetz 80/20 universal for piecing, Schmetz 130/705 quilting for quilting and Organ embroidery for embroidery. I change my embroidery needle after about 50 k stitches. I change my piecing needle after every quilt top and the same with the quilting needle. I find that if I don't I get a lot of thread breakage.

I have a lot of needles in my drawer (most of them 80/20s) and I plan to use them up. They are used both for piecing and for quilting, I probably don't change my needle soon enough but my machine lets me know when it is time (the sound and feel changes) When they are used up I plan to replace my needles with topstitch needles. According to the expert at Superior thread, it is a better choice. I will invest in different sizes because I plan to use different weight thread.
I used microtex/sharps needles for piecing. Size 10 or 12.
I use Topstitch needles for quilting. Size depends on how thick things are in the spot I am quilting. Usually a 14, sometimes a 12 or a 16.
I use Topstitch for embroidering. (my machine doesn't like embroidery needles!) Usually a 12.
I just got a box of 100 size 12 Topstitch needles, will get a box of 100 size 14 Topstitch's with next month's paycheck.
I have to change needles very frequently on my embroidery machine, she is VERY particular about fresh sharp needles. On my 2nd machine, she is not so picky and I can use a needle a bit longer. I always start a new quilt with a new needle.
