This gives you a closer look at it. Both Blondie and CJ's directions will work it looks like to me.

I think Jean is correct. The center square needs to be 4 1/2 and the little squares are 2 1/2. That's where my figures weren't coming out right because I was making the center square 5 inches. If I sew 2 2 1/2 inch squares together they will measure 4 1/2. I was thinking of the center square after it was finished being 4 1/2 inches but when I am sewing the small squares onto it it will still be 4 1/2. Whew, that gave me a headache but I think I have it all straight now. Thanks for all the help! I really want to make this quilt. I think it will be really easy since I have it straight in my head.
I'm making this quilt next and found the directions on moda bakeshop. Well, no it's not the same but very close. Here is the link http://www.modabakeshop.com/2012/02/...red-quilt.html
I was just sitting here drawing it on graph paper and you are correct. My mistake was starting with a 5 inch square but it should be 4 1/2 inches. I think I have it all straight now. Just need to find a charm pack and jelly roll to use. I think it's a gorgeous quilt.
Oh I quite like this quilt! Can't wait to see yours all complete :)
OK I could not get my brain wrapped around this so I actually pulled out some 2 1/2" squares and a charm square. I sewed the 2 1/2"squares together and placed the next to the charm square. You will definately have to trim the charm square down to 4 1/2". Sometimes especially when math is involved I will not get it until I physically try it! I try very hard not to do math in public!
