I have an embroidery machine and I stitch my labels with that. I bought a frame design set and use that. I do know that there are printable fabrics. You could download some free label designs (google search) and then just print them out and sew on. Some printable fabrics are not washable so be careful.
Patchiereggie - there are many ways to do labels on quilts. I'm going to give you some links for here and other places on the internet so you can compare what will work best for you.

I let woven this labels and sew them on the backside of my quilts. they are just the size 1 1/2 to 3 inches, but I think they look nicely. the name "Bella Morgentau" is a mix between my familyname (Schoen in Italian means "Bella" or in Englisch: beautiful, and Morgentau is the name of the road we are living and that means "morningdew") and my adress. And from the Chinese horoscope I am a dragon ...
I was looking at ebay at the quilting panels and saw some panels that are actually printed quilt labels ready to cut out, fill in and sew to the quilt. Seems like a good idea for those of us without an embroidery option.

I haven't labeled my quilt yet, I know that's not good. I want to create a tag from ribbon or twill tape with my name on it, but I don't have an embroidery machine. I'm still looking for someplace that will create this for me.
Good ideas posted Sandy, thanks! I havent labeled any yet either :( and should though.
I like to use an interfac-backed muslin and write my message with pigma pens or other fabric pens. I turn the edge under and only put the interfacing in the center for stability. Sometimes I use decorative stitches on the label too.
I ordered mine from NewarkDress.com and homesew.com. 40 Labels "Created By HdWench Debbie" they took 4 weeks to make them, but $29.50 for 40 labels isn't bad.
Some folks use Spoonflower -- I haven't looked into that -- I've used the Freezer Paper on Muslin through my printer twice, then realized if I blew up our Laser Jet over fabric feeding through DH would toss a FIT! lol Cheaper to buy them made for you than risk your printer :-)

I use some preprinted... just sign and date before sewing them to my quilt...
Getting lots of ideas from ya all....so I'll lurk a bit.
Oh 1 more thing to think of -- IF you are selling to the public, you must also "tag" fabric with Made IN (country), the fabric content (100% cotton), and Washing Instructions -- at least those 3 parts are Federal Law -- the name of your store isn't important to them, BUT it is to me :-) So I can remember where I bought something from.
For your quilts going to family members, the move is to put Your name, the person who is receiving it, town/state is was made in and the date. Other details like item made for B-day etc.. is ok too. Can't find the link about this movement to ensure OUR quilts will be labeled for those future generations, but google it.
